Alibaba's World: How a Remarkable Chinese Company is Changing the Face of Global Business, by Porter Erisman

**One of six of The Wall Street Journal's "Best Business Books of 2015"**

In September 2014, a Chinese company that most Americans had never heard of held the largest IPO in history – bigger than Google, Facebook and Twitter combined. Alibaba, now the world's largest e-commerce company, mostly escaped Western notice for over ten years, while building a customer base more than twice the size of Amazon's, and handling the bulk of e-commerce transactions in China. How did it happen? And what was it like to be along for such a revolutionary ride?

In Alibaba's World, author Porter Erisman, one of Alibaba's first Western employees and its head of international marketing from 2000 to 2008, shows how Jack Ma, a Chinese schoolteacher who twice failed his college entrance exams, rose from obscurity to found Alibaba and lead it from struggling startup to the world's most dominant e-commerce player. He shares stories of weathering the dotcom crash, facing down eBay and Google, negotiating with the unpredictable Chinese government, and enduring the misguided advice of foreign experts, all to build the behemoth that's poised to sweep the ecommerce world today. And he analyzes Alibaba's role as a harbinger of the new global business landscape―with its focus on the East rather than the West, emerging markets over developed ones, and the nimble entrepreneur over the industry titan. As we face this near future, the story of Alibaba―and its inevitable descendants―is both essential and instructive.

**Selected as one of the Best Business Books of 2015 by the Wall Street Journal**

“Fascinating...stories don't get much better than Alibaba's.” ―The Financial Times

“Few westerners have had the opportunity to be in the inner sanctum of a Chinese company. Erisman makes you feel like you were there through the all trials and tribulations -- from Alibaba's humble origins to its David vs Goliath meetings with the chiefs of eBay, Google and Yahoo, to its remarkable arrival as Internet titan. A must-read, full of practical learning for anyone seeking to understand Chinese entrepreneurship or build the business of their dreams.” ―Nick Arnold, former Head of Marketing, Apple Asia

“A fascinating insider's look at the digital opening of China...Erisman's comprehensive account of "how a schoolteacher rose from obscurity to build the world's largest e-commerce company" provides a dizzying look at this company's startling birth, growth, and success.” ―Publisher's Weekly

“An absolute delight to read. Porter Erisman has crafted an insider's loving portrayal of the world's largest e-commerce site, from its humble beginnings in Hong Kong and rural China to its present-day dominance of the online China trade... The book is written in a fresh, engaging style that creates a sense of immediacy and empathy for Alibaba's team. If you like a well-written business yarn, read Alibaba's World. It's how the East was won.” ―The New York Journal of Books

“It is difficult to imagine anyone more qualified than Porter Erisman to provide Westerners with deep insight into one of the greatest business stories of China, and of this century. That Porter happens to be an extremely engaging writer with a wry and savvy eye makes this not only a must-read, but an utterly enjoyable one too.” ―Janet Yang, film producer of THE JOY LUCK CLUB and PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLINT

More of a personal expose and experience than a discussion of the company and what makes it great.
By Mark P. McDonald
This book should be called Erisman's World as its more about him and his experiences than it is about the company. Readers looking to get behind the scenes and really understand Alibaba and how it is different from what you would imagine will not find it here. Alibaba is not just the Amazon, Ebay, Paypal, etc.of China its a very different company. I sought out this book to understand those differences and found more personal ruminations, recollections and references about the author than the company.

Erisman is a former VP of the company and not active since 2008. Much has changed since then. Erisman was there at the start and this book concentrates on the discussions his role of international marketing. He was informed of much of the actions, strategic moves and decisions rather than being on the inside making them. That inside insight is what I was looking for and did not find.

The book is not without some gems, but you have to hang in there to find them in between the personal memoir approach. Readers will have to wade through the first 100 pages to get to them. There is an interesting description of social marketing starting on page 122 - 124. The book devotes the middle part to the Yahoo deal and a battle with eBay. Interesting but not as insightful enough if you are looking to understand Alibaba.

Perhaps my expectations for the book was too high, but given the subtitle on how the company is changing the face of global business I don't think so. Personal memoirs about important companies are a popular genre now. If you are looking for that, then please consider this book. But if you are looking for more, concentrate on the other books about Alibaba that take a more critical and comprehensive point of view.

The Importance of Trust
By FredTownWard
Capitalism works because it is based on reality so capitalists can fail if they do not accurately grasp the realities they are working under. This is the story of a man, Jack Ma, and a company, Alibaba Group, that succeeded because they already had or obtained a more accurate understanding of the realities of doing e-commerce in China than their competitors, both foreign and domestic, and one of the biggest of these is the issue of trust.

The truth is encompassed in all the complicated meanings of the classic word "guanxi", but what matters is the cause and effect. In China both historically and today stronger but more corruptible government combined with a weaker rule of law provides much less recourse after the fact for one who has been cheated so far more effort is put into getting to know, building relationships with, and learning to trust potential business partners BEFORE risking a lot of money, but for obvious reasons, this is a much harder thing to do in e-commerce. A good chunk (though by no means all) of Alibaba's success can be attributed to their coming up with various successful ways to build trust between potential e-commerce business partners in China and (not incidentally) in Alibaba itself: escrow payments held until the purchaser is satisfied, offering services for free to start out, and something as simple as offering online chat rooms so that potential clients who have never met can begin to get to know each other.

Of course as author Porter Erisman freely concedes, neither Ma nor Alibaba are perfect and everything they did can be learned (or learned from) by Western competitors, starting by reading this book. The cool thing about economic competition is that there are no final battles. Today's economic losers can be tomorrow's economic winners and vice versa if Ma and Alibaba ever forget how they got here.

Finally, it is fitting to note that one of Jack Ma's American heroes is (the movie not the book version of) Forrest Gump, a man much too stupid to get away with being sneaky and dishonest, so he settles for being honest and honorable. This course doesn't always lead to success, but most people everywhere want it to, and that counts for something, in business and in life.

The history (and future) behind the headlines!
By AmazonJavaJunki
Like many American's, I've watched the rise of Alibaba with tremendous interest in no small part due to the engaging CEO as well as the China connection. This book is not exactly what I expected; it starts out like a biography about the Alibaba CEO then seems to merge into an autobiography of the author...about mid-way, the book takes on the tremendous topic of Alibaba the company. Make no mistake about it, this is not a complaint...it was just unexpected. Once you read the book it will make sense why the author choose to include these personal details...the company - more than most - is comprised of the individuals and their decision-making process along the way. In fact, the rise of Alibaba is as unique and insightful as the CEO.

This is a fast read but highly engaging. Now, if you are searching for business insight...there is some contained between these pages especially toward the end of the book but that is not the focus. If you are searching for a biography or autobiographical account...well, this isn't exactly that either. It's a bit of a hybrid which only makes sense given the history (and future) of Alibaba.

And that is perhaps where this book shines; by understanding where and how Alibaba arrived at its current position in the world, the reader can better understand the how, why and what is likely to be the future of the company...and Alibaba just may play a more significant role in the future of business here in the West than anyone could have previously imagined.

Blue Nights, by Joan Didion

From one of our most powerful writers, a work of stunning frankness about losing a daughter. Richly textured with bits of her own childhood and married life with her husband, John Gregory Dunne, and daughter, Quintana Roo, this new book by Joan Didion examines her thoughts, fears, and doubts regarding having children, illness, and growing old.

Blue Nights opens on July 26, 2010, as Didion thinks back to Quintana’s wedding in New York seven years before. Today would be her wedding anniversary. This fact triggers vivid snapshots of Quintana’s childhood—in Malibu, in Brentwood, at school in Holmby Hills. Reflecting on her daughter but also on her role as a parent, Didion asks the candid questions any parent might about how she feels she failed either because cues were not taken or perhaps displaced. “How could I have missed what was clearly there to be seen?” Finally, perhaps we all remain unknown to each other. Seamlessly woven in are incidents Didion sees as underscoring her own age, something she finds hard to acknowledge, much less accept.

Blue Nights—the long, light evening hours that signal the summer solstice, “the opposite of the dying of the brightness, but also its warning”—like The Year of Magical Thinking before it, is an iconic book of incisive and electric honesty, haunting and profoundly moving.

Review
“A haunting memoir . . . Didion is, to my mind, the best living essayist in America . . . What appears on the surface to be an elegantly, intelligently, deeply felt, precisely written story of the loss of a beloved child is actually an elegantly, intelligently, deeply felt, precisely written glimpse into the abyss, a book that forces us to understand, to admit, that there can be no preparation for tragedy, no protection from it, and so, finally, no consolation . . . The book has . . . an incantatory quality: it is a beautiful, soaring, polyphonic eulogy, a beseeching prayer the is sung even as one knows the answer to one’s plea, and that answer is: No.”
—Cathleen Schine, The New York Review of Books

“Blue Nights, though as elegantly written as one would expect, is rawer than its predecessor, the ‘impenetrable polish’ of former, better days now chipped and scratched. The author as she presents herself here, aging and baffled, is defenseless against the pain of loss, not only the loss of loved ones but the loss that is yet to come: the loss, that is, of selfhood. The book will be another huge success . . . Certainly as a testament of suffering nobly borne, which is what it will be generally taken for, it is exemplary. However, it is most profound, and most provocative, at another level, the level at which the author comes fully to realize, and to face squarely, the dismaying fact that against life’s worst onslaughts nothing avails, not even art; especially not art.”
—John Banville, The New York Times Book Review

"The marvel of Blue Nights is that its 76-year-old, matchstick-frail author has found the strength to articulate her deepest fears—which are fears we can all relate to."
—Heller McAlpin, The Wasthington Post

The Week magazine's 5 Best Non-Fiction Books of 2011

“The master of American prose turns her sharp eye on her own family once again in this breathtaking follow-up to The Year of Magical Thinking. With harrowing honesty and mesmerizing style, Didion chronicles the tragic death of her daughter, Quintana, interwoven with memories of their happier days together and Didion’s own meditations on aging.”
—Malcolm Jones and Lucas Wittmann, Newsweek

“A searing memoir”
—People

“Darkly riveting . . . The cumulative effect of watching her finger her recollections like beads on a rosary is unexpectedly instructive. None of us can escape death, but Blue Nights shows how Didion has, with the devastating force of her penetrating mind, learned to simply abide.”
—Louisa Kamps, Elle

“A scalpel-sharp memoir of motherhood and loss . . . Now coping with not only grief and regret but also illness and age, Didion is courageous in both her candor and artistry, ensuring that this infinitely sad yet beguiling book of distilled reflections and remembrance is graceful and illuminating in its blue musings.”
—Donna Seaman, Booklist

"Brilliant...Nothing Didion has written since Play It As It Lays seems to me as right and true as Blue Nights. Nothing she has written seems as purposeful and urgent to be told."
—Joe Woodward, Huffington Post

“[Didion] often finds captivating, unparalleled grooves. Her expansive thinking…is particularly striking.”
            —The A. V. Club

“The reader only senses how intimately she understands her instrument. Her sentences are unquestionably taut, rhythmic and precise.”
                —Time Out NY

"A searing, incisive look at grief and loss by one of the most celebrated memoirists of our time."
—Relevant Magazine

"Both Fascinating and heartbreaking."
—Marie Claire

'With Blue Nights, named for the intense and portentous beauty of the dying light, Ms Didion has translated the sad hum of her thoughts onto a profound mediation on mortality. The result aches with wisdom' Economist 'Searingly honest about the extended nightmare of losing a child' Financial Times 'Memory is the subject of her latest book, Blue Nights; its power and its pain and, in Didion's recollection of her now lost motherhood and marriage, its shimmering, unreachable beauty... she shows us, without hope but finally unafraid, that all days must end' The Times 'One of the supreme observers of American life' Daily Express 'The relentless questions betray a palpable strain, Didion is aware of this- it's part of the book's point. It's searing mainly for what this venerated US writer hasn't been able to put into words' Metro 'like nothing else Didon has written... Yet how else could she write such a book, in such a moment?... Lays bare an anguish that that infects her every waking moment' New Statesman 'This is an honest and sympathetic study of bereavement, bereft of self pity, a genuine search for an answer to an imponderable question' Jeffery Taylor, Sunday Express 'a searing poignancy...there is something epic about the scale of Joan Didion's misfortune...[Blue Nights] has an indomitable quality: a steely willingness to recollect past happiness in present adversity - the deepest of all sorrows, according to Dante - which it is impossible not to admire.' The Hard Language of Truth
By Federico (Fred) Moramarco
I've been reading Joan Didion's work for nearly half a century--I got hooked by her early collection, Slouching Toward Bethlehem (1968) and have read every thing she's written since. For years I began my Contemporary American Literature class at San Diego State University with the famous first sentence from her collection, The White Album: "We tell ourselves stories in order to live." I used that as a keynote to the course because I wanted students to understand that stories are not merely entertainment (although they can be that) but life essentials. Without them life as we know it would be impossible. Ask anyone a basic question: "Where are you from?" "What school did you go to? What do you do for a living? And so on, and he or she will tell you a story. We use stories to link together the disconnected moments of our lives, or as Didion so cogently puts it in "The White Album," "We live entirely, especially if we are writers, by the imposition of a narrative line upon disparate images, by the `ideas' with which se have learned to freeze the shifting phantasmagoria which is our actual experience." "Shifting phantasmagoria"--that's how we perceive our lives-- just one thing after another. And sometimes those kaleidoscopic images can shift from bright dazzling colors to dark opaque hues with just a single twist of the lens.

This is of course what happened to Didion. As everyone knows, in the last several years she has suffered mightily. Her stunning, heartbreaking book, The Year of Magical Thinking, which told the story of her husband John Gregory Dunne's sudden, unexpected death, haunts the memory and takes us inside a deep, unsettling grief that turned her life upside down. Blue Nights is in a sense a sequel to that book, as grief piled upon grief and less than two year's after her husband's death, she lost her daughter, Quintana Roo, , who had been seriously ill since even before her father's death. Blue Nights tells the story of that second loss, and conveys the incomparable anguish a parent feels upon losing a child. But it also goes beyond that to become a meditation on the inevitability of death, and both the frailty and surprise of old age.

This latter part of Blue Nights, which explores Didion's newly-bestowed identity as an ailing, anxious, lonely, disconnected, forgetful old woman is especially hypnotic reading. As Gertrude told Hamlet, " `tis common; all that lives must die/Passing through nature to eternity." This universally common reality is the story that Didion tells in the last and strongest section of this book. All of her yearning for the presence of her daughter while extremely moving, echoes much of the longing she experienced for her husband's presence in The Year of Magical Thinking. But here she takes us even more deeply inside her anxieties and vulnerabilities. She worries about losing her ability to write, to move about, to walk without pain, to remember things. She acknowledges the strange heightened sense of accelerating time that is peculiar to old age. Read this remarkable passage, which anyone older than 70 will surely relate to--but because many readers will be much younger than that, it will give them an inkling of what's coming.

"Aging and its evidence remain life's most predictable events, yet they also remain matters we prefer to leave unmentioned, unexplored: I have watched tears flood the eyes of grown women, loved women, women of talent and accomplishment, for no reason other than a small child...has just described them as `wrinkly,' or asked how old they are. When we are asked this question we are always undone by iots innocence, somehow whammed by the clear bell-like tones in which it is asked. What shames us is this: the answer we give is never innocent. The answer we give is unclear, evasive, even guilty. Right now when I answer this question I find myself doubting my own accuracy, rechecking the increasingly undoable arithmetic (born December 5 1934, subtract 1934 from 2009, do this in your head and watch yourself get muddled by the interruption of the entirely irrelevant millennium), insisting to myself (no one else particularly cares) that there must be a mistake: only yesterday I was in my fifties, by forties, only yesterday I was thirty-one."

It's hard to stop quoting from Didion as she connects dots. She was thirty-one when Quintana was born...and that of course was only yesterday as well, and then all the yesterdays come tumbling down, all her "what-ifs," all her nostalgic memories of her early life in LA when they called freeways by names instead of numbers, when she "could still do arithmetic, remember telephone numbers, rent a car at the airport and drive it out of the lot without freezing, stopping at the key moment, feet already on the pedals but immobilized by the question of which is the accelerator and which is the brake." This is unsparingly honest and brave writing about the kind of thing old people usually go out of their way to cover up. How honest it is is revealed in the final two sentences which contrasts what she tells the rental car attendant with what she tells the reader. Here is absolute honesty about the ongoing dishonesty of us who have entered our seventies:
"I invent a reason for the Hertz attendant to start the rental car.
"I am seventy-five years old: this is not the reason I give."

When you have the kind of long-term life relationship with a writer that I have with Joan Didion you feel that you know him or her personally. Although I have never actually met her, it feels like I'm reading about my own family--my own life. Don't be put off by the grimness of the subject matter; this book is a treasure.

An Uneven Evensong
By Smith's Rock
At a conference I attended once, a young and fiercely idealistic CEO of a hospital stated his goal in life: "When I lay my head down for the last time, when it is my time to die, I want to be able to look back over the years and know that what I did with my life, professional and personal, changed the lives of my family and friends, and the lives of the people that came through my hospital system, in a deeply positive way". Blue Nights, Joan Didion's memoir/partial autobiography/memorial to her husband and daughter, is a sort of "Now I lay me down to sleep" narrative, delivered from the vantage point of 75 years of life on planet Earth.

Didion's life pathway has been strewn with deaths of family members (husband and daughter) and significant friends, as well as with not a few health problems of her own. There is an Arab saying "All sunshine makes a desert". There has most certainly been rain in Didion's life. A memoir such as Blue Nights offered the opportunity to see what oases of wisdom and tranquility could bloom in the desert when the water of tragedy is applied. Did Didion utilize this opportunity? Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist and neurologist that survived the Holocaust, said "Who is to give light must endure burning". Blue Nights offered Didion the opportunity to share light with her readers, light emanating from the searing pain of personal loss that she suffered. Most simply put, many cultures have come up with proverbs that reduce to this: without pain, there is no wisdom. Didion details the pain that she has experienced in life in Blue Nights. Does she leverage that pain to bring her readers wisdom? Does Blue Nights give light that radiates from the intense suffering that Didion has endured? All humans eventually face death, both our own, and of those we love. When the sunshine in Didion's life was obscured by the rain storms that befell her (and befall all of us), is it clear in Blue Nights that she used those floodwaters to nurture the growth of wisdom that we readers might vicariously access? I would argue that in writing the beautiful prosody and intriguing autobiographical tale of Blue Nights....that Didion did not, or could not, answer those questions in the affirmative.

Memoirs can be read for a variety of reasons, all of which are probably legitimate. Read from the point of view of gaining an interior view of the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of one of America's great writers, Blue Nights succeeds. Many psychologists and psychiatrists agree that loss of a child is the single most stressful event adults can endure, and Didion's formidable writing talents bring home such a tragedy with devastating force. Blue Nights also succeeds on the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" level. Didion does compulsive name-dropping in this book. At times, when she feels the reader might not understand the importance of the person she is has just mentioned, the story veers away from tragedy into a Wikipedia like segment on just WHY the person she is mentioning is such a luminary. Such is the case when we become thoroughly informed about the importance of an organized crime figure whose table Didion sits at. At best, such information seems like a bit of a non sequitur; at worst, blatant self-aggrandizement.

Quintana Roo, Didion's adopted daughter who died at age 39, occupies a front and center position in the book. I should mention that I have been a Joan Didion fan for 40 years. I'll also say that in Blue Nights I felt that Didion's treatment of the agony of losing a child veered into frank melodrama, and cloying sentimentalism. Didion's writing, long an example to me of startlingly insights and clear-eyed analyses of the country and culture that she has grown up in, has seemed almost absent of sentimentality and melodrama in the past. No longer is this the case. It is true that sentimentality and melodrama sell well in the entertainment world. Most would agree that neither are the hallmarks of excellence in art.

Those that enjoy highly detailed accounts of celebrity lives will be entertained by Blue Nights. Readers actively pursuing the liqueur of wisdom that can be distilled from the crazy fermentation called life are not likely to find resonance with this book. Some say that the definition of important art is that it both entertains AND informs. Blue Nights makes it halfway there.

Bad taste in mouth after reading
By B. Tracy
I have always loved Joan Didion, to the point that I thought she could do no wrong. I would await each new book with absolutely no hesitation that I might not enjoy it. The same happened when I received "Blue Nights" and I launched right into it with the comfortable knowledge that I would surely love it.

About halfway through, I realized the biggest reaction I was having to the book was annoyance. Ms. Didion, while clearly distraught by her daughter's untimely death, seems to be too self-conscious of how she herself comes across in the book, making sure to share more n enough detail about how fabulous and successful her life has been. Quintana Roo, as I fear might be the case in real life, seems to be an afterthought, someone who provides some funny quips for her mother to use in her writing. Quintana Roo seems to me like a little girl desperately wanting her parents to love her and include her, apparent in such stories like her daughter's "sundries" or her "cancer diagnosis" (chicken pox). I think theone part that confirmed for me that DIdion is no longer accessible to her readers is when she oh-so-delightfully explains how on all the trips they would take Quintana Roo on, her daughter didn't understand what it meant to be "on expenses" and "not on expenses." How dare a little girl not realize that when a big studio is picking up the tab, you can order caviar, but when your parents have to actually spend their own money, you can't spoil yourself with othe people's money? What an adorable tale to relay to the everyman reader!

Didion has lost me at this point. As another reviewer noted, I would love to know more about Quintana Roo, but maybe it's someone else's job to tell us about her, someone who won't be so self-aware of her own portrayal in the story as is clearly the case with this author.

From Publishers Weekly
In Morris's "strong and painful" first novel, Aubrey Wallace, a simple, good-hearted laborer on a Vermont road crew, falls for Dotty--cute, tarty, amoral and utterly freaked-out--who lures him away from his family to a wandering, criminal half-life on the road, with a kidnapped child in tow. "The story drives inexorably to its cynical and wrenching climax, fueled on booze, drugs and human misery," noted PW.

From Library Journal
For five years, a shy, backward man travels the country with a wild young woman and a kidnapped child, living by stealing and by selling stolen goods. Helpless Aubrey Wallace does not have the courage or the know-how to escape the situation in which he is trapped with the sexually abused Dotty Johnson, who has brutally killed her father and stolen 18-month-old Canny. Aubrey, attached to Canny, shows her as much love and care as he can, letting Dotty call all the shots. The tragedy in this bizarre, intriguing first novel is a child's exposure, in her most formative and impressionable years, to a life of violence. But for Canny there is hope: she could be returned to her natural parents. For Aubrey and Dotty, there is no hope left. Jeris Cassel, Rutgers Univ. Libs., New Brunswick, N.J.

An intense drama
By jmh
How does one attempt to relate to you how engrossing this story is? There are some strong emotions and issues going on with this story. Briefly, the story revolves around a young female con-artist, Dottie, who by chance (and only chance) happens upon a slow witted man, Aubrey Wallace. Aubrey has a (bitter) wife and family of his own, but is constantly berated and harrassed by her. Aubrey and Dottie link up in a freak meeting and he is literally overwhelmed..from that moment on he is under her control and she takes every advantage of it. A young toddler, Cannie, gets snatched right out of her own house and from under her distracted mother. Suddenly, the toddler finds herself a new mother and father. Her new mother is but an immature, self-centered child herself and only took the child for use as a smoke screen to avoid her past. For mentally challenged Aubrey, his heart rules his head in many instances, and he genuinely grows to love and adore Cannie, as Cannie grows to love him and believes both of them to be her parents. A child's allegiance is strong, and this bond introduces disastrous consequences. Years pass as they remain homeless and always trying to keep one step ahead of detection by the law. Their life is pathetic and heart wretching. As the situtions become more complicated, Aubrey struggles with right and wrong, love and abuse. All the time you are reading, you know at some point the deception has to end. The ending is a surprise and extremely intense. You will find yourself torn with loyalties and attachments on both sides of the issue. Mary McGarry Morris is brilliant

Pucker, by Melanie Gideon

Thomas Quicksilver, known to his classmates as "Pucker," has always been an outsider. His crazy mother, the secret of his family’s strange origins, and above all, the terrible scars on his face from a childhood fire—these things have kept Thomas isolated and alone.

Now, at seventeen, a quest to save his dying mother takes Thomas back to his birthplace, an alternate world called Isaura from which he and his mother were exiled years earlier. In Isaura, Thomas’s scars will be magically healed. He will fall in love for the first time. And he will face a devastating, impossible choice.

In shimmering prose, Melanie Gideon’s new novel takes readers from the lonely places in a boy’s soul to a miraculous world of infinite possibility and frightening temptation.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up Thomas Quicksilver (born Thomas Gale) has lived half his 17 years with burn scars that earned him the nickname Pucker. However, neither the scars nor the change in his name is as traumatic as his adventures in the alternative world of Isaura, his birth home. There, Seers hold political power and failed or ruined humans immigrate only to become servants, or Changed, with no personal will. Thomas, who fled Isaura in childhood with his widowed mother, has adapted well to life in contemporary America. However, Serena is losing her life force and sends him on a mission to restore her Seerskin. Once Thomas returns to his homeland purportedly as one of the Changed he must avoid being identified by the natives, fight to keep alive his own will to find the Seerskin and return to Earth, become accustomed to his newly invoked movie-star good looks, and cope with other Changed ones, including a feisty girl with whom he falls in love. Gideon's many characters are nuanced and credible. None is perfect, and even those with major flaws are shown to have positive attributes. The parallel world, with its adherence to late-19th-century technology, offers much to ponder, not only by readers, but also by Thomas. The only shortcoming of this fascinating novel is its abrupt ending, which, at least, comes after he has re-immigrated to Earth and is living with both his recovering mother and his returned keloid scars. From Booklist
Gr. 8-11. With his face hideously scarred by a childhood fire, 17-year-old Thomas Quicksilver has been cruelly nicknamed "Pucker" by his classmates. But Tom knows that his scars are not the only things that make him an outsider. In fact, he and his mother, Serena, are actually exiles from another world, Isaura, where both of his parents were Seers. Now, to save his mother's life, Thomas must endanger his own by returning to Isaura in search of the seerskin that had been flayed from Serena's body. Though filled with contrivance and a premise that is too complicated, Gideon's first novel has enough page-turning moments of suspense, plot twists and turns, and narrative surprises to hold readers' interest to its improbable happy ending. good fantasy
By terryannlibrarian
The alternate world in this book (Isaura) is remeniscent of the Irish Faerie world in the New Policeman. Pucker explores the life of a horribly scarred teen and his dying mother.
This is a well written emotionally satisfying book with a look at what it must be like to be tragically disfigured in a world full of beautiful people. Pucker is abused by his fellow man and tested greatly when he must choose between himself being healed and his mother being healed. A good read for fantasy lovers.

Exquisite award winner!!!
By An Avid Reader
Moving, imaginative, and a page turner, this book embodies what YA fantasy novels should be about!

I check the credentials before I buy (who can afford to spend money on a bad book??!!), and found out this one's just been nominated by the American Library Association to be the best YA book of this year, which it deserves to win.

Enough said.

A Story About Redemption
By lectitans
Thomas Quicksilver was born in Isaura, a world that exists parallel to our modern Earth. In Isaura, everything is pre-ordained. Family dinners are dictated weeks in advance, not because anyone wants it to be so, but because a group of fortune tellers called The Seers have predicted what they will be. Each day, the citizens of Isaura visit the Seers to learn what their fate is for that day, and how it can be changed for the better. In Isaura, most of the hard labor is performed by a group of people called the Changed: individuals who were deformed or handicapped in some way on Earth but are made whole when they come to Isaura. Both of Thomas's parents were Seers, but he and his mother were exiled to Earth after the death of his father. Thomas was the one who found his father, lying on the kitchen floor dead and stripped of his Seerskin, a glittering golden membrane that makes it possible for Seers to do their work. His mother had been skinned as well. Thomas, afraid and alone, hid under the sink until he thought he could sense Cook, a woman who had cared for him his whole life, coming. He reached up to grab her, but instead, pulled the curtains out of the kitchen window down upon himself; she wasn't there yet, and the candles that were burning in the kitchen when he found his parents had set the curtains aflame. Thomas was burned to the point of deformity.

On Earth, Thomas's mother can use her precognition even without her Seerskin, and makes a living by telling fortunes. Eventually, she starts to sense everything that is about to happen to everyone near her, to the point where she can't be around people anymore because her head has become so crowded with images of their futures. She tells Thomas she needs him to return to Isaura, disguising himself as a candidate to be Changed, and recover her skin. He reluctantly agrees to do so, but once he is in Isaura he finds himself distracted. It turns out if he hadn't been so severely burned, he would have been stunningly handsome. The Changed girls all want to spend time with him, and he enjoys the attention he's never had. He falls in love with another of the Changed, begins to feel himself at home again in Isaura, and is tempted to forget about saving his mother and just stay there. Thomas is torn between his desire to live a life he's never known and his obligation to help his mother.

This is a book about redemption, though it comes to it in a roundabout way. Melanie Gideon has created a fascinating world, and paints a picture of a society that is apparently serene, but exists only because of a disturbing social structure. The world-building Gideon has done here is Pucker's greatest strength. Even when I was tired of Thomas Quicksilver, I still wanted to see how things would turn out for his world.

Thomas Quicksilver is not a flawless hero, and the flaws he has aren't charming. He is, however, an accurate portrait of a teenage boy. If you put down Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix because you found Harry's behavior obnoxious, you shouldn't read Pucker. If, however, you kept reading either because Harry's teenage antics amused you or because you wanted to see how he would grow through it all, then Pucker will provide you with a similar vision of a young man's growth. Thomas Quicksilver does some things that make him near despicable, not the least of which is dating a set of girls all at the same time, disparaging them while doing it, and pursuing another girl who is the one he actually loves. Still, these conflicting actions made him all the more believable to me. Teenage boys chafe against authority, love being an object of desire, and - especially when denied a "normal" experience, as Thomas has been - might drink too deep once offered life's pleasures. While some of Thomas's actions hurt his likability, they absolutely cemented his plausibility. In a book set in a world so different from our own, we need a foothold to understanding the world. Characters who feel the same things we feel and do things we or people we know might do can be that foothold, and that's how Pucker succeeds.

I would recommend this book to fans of the more recent Harry Potter books and anyone who likes stories where utopias are maintained through dystopian circumstances.

Tolkien Tapestry: Pictures to Accompany the Lord of the Rings, by Cor Blok

This brand new full-colour art book reveals in sumptuous detail more than 100 paintings based on The Lord of the Rings by acclaimed Dutch artist, Cor Blok, many of which appear here for the first time. Fifty years ago, shortly after The Lord of the Rings was first published, Cor Blok read the work and was completely captivated by its invention and epic storytelling. The breadth of imagination and powerful imagery inspired the young Dutch artist, and this spark of enthusiasm, coupled with his desire to create art that resembled a historical artefact in its own right, led to the creation of more than 100 paintings. Following an exhibition at the Hague in 1961, JRR Tolkien's publisher, Rayner Unwin, sent him five pictures. Tolkien was so taken with them that he met and corresponded with the artist and even bought some paintings for himself. The series bears comparison with the Bayeux Tapestry, in which each tells an epic and complex story in deceptively simple style, but beneath this simplicity lies a compelling and powerful language of form that becomes more effective as the sequence of paintings unfolds. The full-colour paintings in this new book are presented in story order so that the reader can enjoy them as the artist intended. They are accompanied by extracts from The Lord of the Rings and the artist also provides an extensive introduction illuminating the creation of the series and notes to accompany some of the major compositions. Many of the paintings appear for the very first time. Readers will find Cor Blok's work refreshing, provocative, charming and wholly memorable - the bold and expressive style that he created stands as a unique achievement in the history of fantasy illustration. Rarely has an artist captured the essence of a writer's work in such singular fashion; the author found much to admire in Cor Blok's work, and what higher accolade is there?

About the Author
Cor Blok was born in The Hague in 1934, and attended the Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating in 1956, he worked at the Gemeentemuseum until 1965, where, among other roles, he compiled a catalogue of the museum's large collection of works by Piet Mondrian. During this time he also painted about 140 pictures inspired by The Lord of the Rings, a selection of which was exhibited at The Hague. When a sample of his paintings was sent to JRR Tolkien this led to a correspondence and eventual meeting with the author, who bought two paintings and was presented with a third. Cor Blok lives in Amsterdam, where he is currently at work on a graphic novel.

Highly Recommended
By B
Apart from the lovely, refreshing illustrations inspired by Tolkien's literary world, this book contains an insightful essay written by Mr. Cor Blok. The original paintings/illustrations are very small, therefore the reproductions are small in size. The book is executed in high quality print.
Several decades ago Mr. Blok shifted his efforts to teaching exclusively, which is a shame in my opinion because we need more artists/illustrators of his calibre. The glossy, tucked-in illustrations that somehow came to be inseparable from fantasy genre books are, most of the times, crippling to readers' imagination. Don't get me wrong, I love illustrations created by Alan Lee and John Howe, but Mr. Blok's visions spring from a deeper source...from a place where ideas can be visualised and materialized on an almost abstract level, and yet they are closely connected to the relation of opposites within the story, to the colour of invisible threads that Tolkien weaves...the artist isn't trying to impress us, he is trying to stay close to the truth behind the written word.. I love that fact that his illustrations say so much and yet they seem so simple!

I would recommend this book to anyone who:

-is professionally interested in book illustration.
-is interested in the essence of illustration and the thought process behind it.
-likes the illustrations Tolkien drew for his own books back in the day...if you like those, you'll love these!

PS For those having a hard time grasping the idea of abstract art in general, I recommend Wassily Kandinsky's "Concerning the Spiritual in Art".

Prophetic evangelism training at its best
By Rachel Hunter
Take caution! Matthew Robert Payne’s "Prophetic Evangelism Made Simple: Prophetic Seed Sowing" makes readers want to hit the ground running in sharing God’s heart with the masses. The author writes in an easy-flowing format with a simple sentence structure that makes it easy for people of all ages to understand. Through stories and ample instructions, Mr. Payne’s book demystifies prophetic evangelism – and encourages all to be open in hearing God’s voice, and to stop for the one He puts in our path. His compassion is visible on every page, and this is possibly the best training for on-the-street prophetic evangelism on the market today. Get this book, apply the lessons, and you won’t be disappointed.

Great read! You will not be disappointed.
By Jonathan Lara
I read this book in three days. I could not put it down! This book is great for those wanting to understand if they're called to the prophetic, and/or how to grow in the prophetic. As well as overcoming the fear of stepping out. I came across this book after typing "street prophecy" in the search bar. I read up the description and the reviews and it seemed good to me. I had never heard of Matthew Robert Payne. But let me tell you I'm glad I purchased this book. It was a great blessing!

Great training for prophetic evangelism!
By Jay D. Smith
This book has been hands down the best prophetic training manual for use in evangelism that I have read. Matthew lays down a simplistic methodology which begins with loving Jesus and loving people. His compassion for the lost and the saints in delivering "seeds" of the prophetic is real and honest. I recommend this book and its application for those desiring to evangelize God's way!
