A very important work for Native American history - a necessary read

I can't even say how many times I've read this book at this point. Harmon's deeply researched work provides a new perspective on Native Americans and their economic history. Harmon begins her discussion by discussing the initial encounters between the Virginia Company and the Powhatans and concludes with a significant discussion of Indian gaming. While I highly recommend reading this book in its entirety, you could easily use this work as a reference by reading the introduction and the chapters that cover a particular era to add nuance to other research interests and projects.

Ignores the most important things...

Another wishy-washy academic treatise which ignores the problems caused by Indian casinos and the resulting disenfranchisement of many non-Indians. The author concludes her treatise by writing "Inherent in every debate- intercultural or intracultural- has been a possibility of finding common ideological or moral ground between Indians and non-Indians." It is easy to say this when you are not a US citizen living near a casino and finding that your politicians won't help you because they have been bought by Indian money, the bureaucrats in Washington keep transferring land from the US to the Indian nations, Indians reap the benefits of exclusive casinos and don't have to pay taxes, and there doesn't appear anything you can do about any of it! Since when did federal Indian policy reach such a sorry state? Don't bother to read this book, it is like a trip to Never-Never Land.
