Very important read on Animal Rights

Uncaged: Top Activists Share Their Wisdom on Effective Farm Animal Advocacy is a must read for everyone, animal lover or not. I was especially taken by the section written by Dr. Charlotte Laws, PhD. Laws brilliantly points out that there can never be true consideration for nonhuman animals under a democracy that is only run for people, which excludes all living beings, namely animals. In an Omniocracy, a term she coined, nonhuman animals are constituents therein their interests are considered. As an animal lover who's been involved in animal rescue for the past twenty-eight years, I am thrilled to read what this author has to say in favor of setting up a government that shines a light on animal abuse and advocates to stop it. She gives examples how each of us can make a difference, in practical doable ways. I highly recommend this book to read what she and others who have written here have to say for the betterment of living in harmony and the ending of suffering to our animal brethren.

This book is an absolutely precious tool for any animal rights activist who wishes to make a difference for animals. It provides us with excellent advices from the best activists in order for us to truly make a difference at our own scale, using the right arguments and understanding our audience.

Thought provoking and an impetus for everyday action

This book is exceptional, and a serious contribution to the public dialogue about factory farming. I found it to be an amazing and well written strategy course for being an effective change agent that an experienced advocate or newcomer can benefit from. The thoughtful and compelling series of essays at the back in particular really serve to assist in putting the rest of the content in perspective, and in a candid, straightforward way move a reader to look beyond their peripheral vision. I especially appreciated being challenged by these closing essays to think outside the box in questioning some easy to make assumptions; and the sections on practical strategies and resources are a great help indeed.

Winner of the 1995 Pilgrim Award, the book examines the differences between the religious themes of 2001: A Space Odyssey and the clinical random evil depicted in Event Horizon. Vivian Sobchack's detailed analysis of a wide range of films and inclusion of black-and-white movie stills allows a better understanding of science fiction films as an art form that can often present its characters, a la Blade Runner, as "more human than human."

About the Author
Vivian Sobchack is Professor and Associate Dean in the School of Theater, Film, and Television at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the author of "Screening Space: The American Science Fiction Film "(1997) and "The Address of the Eye: A Phenomenology of Film Experience "(1992) and the editor of "Meta-Morphing: Visual Transformation and the Culture of Quick Change "(2000) and "The Persistence of History: Cinema, Television, and the Modern Event "(1996), among other books.

Worth reading if you enjoy Science Fiction and its phyche.

I recommend anyone who is interested in Science Fiction to at least glance at this book. Yes, glance. What I enjoy most from this book is how it provides pictures of movie scenes, corresponding them with the points and theories presented. It does it in a way to make what may seem overbearing (to some people mind you) rather interesting and insightful. The visualizations help things 'click' so well. The reading becomes more and more bareable as you read on once you get used to the structure. It's great. Even if you don't like reading, buy it for the pictures it presents; just by looking at them and the small, bold explainations below will help you gain a whole new outlook on Science Fiction. Besides the visuals, I would say it is the best critical response of the Science Fiction film I have read. Other books I checked out seemed boring and unattractive. This book caught me when I looked at it. In fact, I was doing a paper in college for a History through Film class and my Instructor asked for the Catalog information. So I guess I'm not the only one. Other then that, the seriousness of the book gives the genre what it diserves while retaining your interest to read on. Most importantly, though, it helps clear up thoughts I've had for years and makes it presentable in words. Very gratifying. Check it out.

Could use another edition and update

Sobchack does a handy job writing about the language and symbols of science fiction in film, with a clear backing in the language and imagery of science fiction books and comics. Sobchack also uses the sci-fi film as a way of writing about life when the movie was made, and the anxieties that such films might expose. For instance, a movie about evil robots reflects anxieties about the rapid pace of technological advancement.
The major flaw with this book is that with each major new science fiction film, it becomes out of date. Sobchack's takes are interesting and insightful enough that the book unreasonably suffers from the simple fact that there's not enough space nor enough time to cover every science fiction movie. What would Sobchack think about a film like Avatar, or Interstellar, or the Mad Max series? We may never know, unfortunately.

A helpful guide for architects seeking to design and build "green buildings"

Intended to teach students, architects and construction experts how to integrate green strategies into the design process, this user-friendly and practical handbook provides a good introduction to "green design" strategies, guidelines and techniques that will save energy, water, and material resources during the schematic design of green buildings.

An excellent starting point, Kwok and Grondzik provides for each strategy a brief description of basic principles and essential concepts, step-by-step methodologies for integrating these technologies into the design process, a series of tables and charts helpful for preliminary design, key considerations to think about when implementing one of the strategies described, and helpful references to recent international standards, rating systems, and guidelines.
The authors add value by offering conceptual design sketches and numerous color photographs to illustrate each of the 42 strategies. A discussion and case studies relevant to the green design process profiling several building projects helps to contextualize the strategies offered.

More than 500 sketches and color photographs describe and illustrate the concepts and applications discussed. Ten new case studies differentiate this second edition from the first. Also, site analysis and glazing strategies were added with new tables/drawings that should simplify the concepts, preliminary system sizing, and use of strategies for readers.

Bottom line? This looks to be a very helpful guide for designers seeking to make informed choices regarding the most efficient way to design and build a green building.

Usefull on many levels and for probably for many audiences

From the first chapter its clear that the Green Studio Handbook is designed to help professional landscape architects for reference and for passing the various licensing tests that exist with the profession. As neither a PLA or someone looking to take the tests, I still found this book fascinating and useful if you are either the DIY type or just interested in "green" techniques like myself.

The book is primarily divided up into 6 areas: envelope (site analysis), lighting, heating, cooling, energy production, water and waste. The last chapter includes case studies and then an appendix. Most of the sections start with a broad overview, and then go into areas like available options, implementation considerations, architectural issues design procedures and examples. The case studies tend to involve all of the previous sections and go over the examples in more of informative way then with any type of critical eye.

Since I'm not a professional I can't really speak to the needs of that audience and weather or not this book meets those needs. As an enviromentalist who has some experience with home building and finds interest in how things work, I was surprised about how much I liked this. There are quite a bit of formulas and technical jargon that no one should have delusions about reading this and being able to implement major aspects of LEED certification without training, but I think DIY's with extensive experience can use this for many purposes previously mentioned.

Clearly written and wonderful visuals for understanding all the intricacies of sustainable strategies. I highly recommend this book to anyone learning about passive solar; passive heating and cooling; sustainable building methods; geothermal; photovoltaics; and there are so many other great techniques in this book.

This textbook is an AMAZING must-have for anyone looking into education regarding the architecture of green buildings.

This book in the series is just as captivating as the previous four books. Its suspense keeps you reading, and the detail in the writing makes one feel like you are there and part of the story. Fran Shaff is one very gifted writer that puts her whole self in the story, and her detail is beyond words. What a gift she has!
