Important and inspirational tale of a young woman who defied slavery

Harriet Tubman has to rate as one of the most amazing heroines in history. A slave born in America in about 1820, (I say about as she never really new her birth date). She was always fired with a stronger will than her 'master' and 'mistress' liked. As a very young girl she was taken to the big house but she never got on with the mistress. She ended up whipped and sent back to be a field hand. She was short, but she worked so hard she soon was capable of doing a mans work. However she never wished to bow her head to any one.

When she was quite young she helped another slave escape and in the process was badly injured. Despite leaving her with sudden sleeping spells she escaped and went on to join the freedom train. Her inspirational way, strength and sheer will made her extremely successful at freeing many others - even when they eventually had to take the 'train' all the way to Canada. She even helped her elderly parents escape.

This is as much a story of slavery in America as this outlines the background of what Harriet was doing. Why she suddenly had to take her 'passengers' beyond the Delaware border to Canada. The wrangling of the slave-owning congress who wanted all slaves returned, that Lincoln refused to allow black troops in the civil war at first - and paid them only 2/3rds of what the white troops were earning.

It also talks about Harriet's life after the end of the civl war and her support of her family, friends and freedmen institutions to better her community.

This is a very well written, informative and entertaining book suitable for 8-12 year olds and I would highly recommend it. It is inpirational - about a girl who would not give up hope and when she could acted on it. I really liked the fact that this story is about someone who actually made change. This is not a glamouress herione, but one who really changed the face of America.

In the beginning of the book Harriet Tubman was planning how to escape from slavery. She worked on a plantation in the south like so many other slaves. Harriet Tubman escaped with another slave and they got caught a white man hit Harriet in the head with a heavy object which caused her to have a concusion. When she got better she tried it again and made it to the north, were she got a job. She went back and got her family and friends. Harriet started making friends on the way that would help her and other slaves escape to the north, so Harriet started going back to the south and freeing slaves. She freed more then 300 slaves over the year.
Also Harriet fought in the army, became a nurse in an Negro hospital and trained other women to be nurses and founded the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She was a very tall black women that could not read or write. But she did so much for the slaves and to help free them.

An unforgetable masterpiece.

A wonderful book. When I say masterpiece, I mean masterpiece. A brillent true story of a brave young woman who lives in the hearts of children as a role model. When I read the book I felt like I was really there. It is very realistic. Harriet Tubman is an exellent book. Read it!

About the Author
H. David Coulter received a Ph.D. in anatomy from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in 1968. Dr. Coulter has been practicing yoga since 1974. He was initiated by Swami Veda, trained under Swami Rama and studied under Pandit Rajmani Tigunait at the Himalayan Institute since 1988.

Thorough and meticulous

This book is required for the yoga teacher training I am enrolled in. I've read it from cover to cover and I was blown away by the amount of information Coulter presents. He doesn't make references to specific schools but presents things very generally. He also doesn't use too much Sanskrit, so most yoga students shouldn't be too intimidated by the material.
The information he presents on Breathing, the importance of the Abdominopelvic muscles (or the "core muscles", as they're popularly known today) and his chapter on Forward Bends where he discusses nutation were my favorite portions. Coulter isn't doctrinaire in most cases, as is appropriate for someone discussing the anatomical aspect of yoga. He presents variations for the popular poses (forward bends, cobra, triangle, etc.) and discusses what the ramifications of the modifications are. While some are called "advanced" and some are called "beginner", it doesn't come off as a value judgment.
Because Coulter was so thorough throughout the entire book and backed up almost every statement with a logical explanation, it was noticeable when he did not. For instance, he, like almost every other author of a yoga text, recommends that women not practice inversions if they are menstruating. Why? I really hoped that someone with his background would be able to supply an explanation other than because that's the way it's been done. Also, while he spends quite a bit of time talking about the importance of the right tetrahedron for meditation postures and the various postures that can be used, I felt he glossed over the reasons why meditation has to be done sitting versus lying down. Minor quibbles, but only more obvious because the rest of the book is so meticulous.
If you are planning on teaching yoga, if you already have a yoga practice or if you're not quite convinced that yoga can do anything for your body, pick up this book.

Coulter's comprehensive book provides a new bridge between the empirical traditions of yoga science, and Western physiology and anatomy. He uses his deep knowledge of both sides of the divide to provide detailed accounts of what is happening during yoga asanas and pranayama breathing. While I had expected this to be useful in providing answers for questions that I, my colleagues and students have had, trying to fit yoga into a Western scientific context, I have been delighted to find that there is a feedback loop, with the Western analysis making it easier to maintain the detailed instructions I had previously learned from teachers and other books.
This is an impressively detailed and exhaustive book, including coverage of movement and posture, breathing, many categories of asana, and relaxation and meditation. In each case, the physiological information is linked to practice, and often different levels of the posture are discussed. The writing style is clear and informal. There are anatomical diagrams, charts of breathing patterns, and photographs of the poses, but this is a long way from the current trend towards thumbnail pictures of every stage of a pose.
In such a thorough and dense volume (over 600 pages in all) the major challenge is easy access to specific information when you need it. There are two indexes, by anatomical term and by specific practices, but I would have welcomed more context within the indexes (for example, to direct me to the most appropriate of 12 mentions of the synovial joint). I think my carping on this topic will diminish my familiarity with the content grows, as I use the book more over the months and years -- which I certainly intend to do. Highly recommended.

It may still be a while before our leading medical schools issue texts examining yoga in detail, so former anatomy professor and dedicated yogi H. David Coulter, Ph.D. has done them a favor (and they, along with every HMO, hospital, and preventive-care clinic in the country should order copies now). In this exhaustive guide to the ups, downs, twists and turns of most fundamental asanas (and a few advanced ones), Coulter tells you a lot more than your recently certified yoga teacher may know about exactly what's going on with your body during the yogic experience. (Yoga teachers, you should order now too!) And the author has the seasoning to issue knowledgeable warnings about the fact that, poorly practiced, yoga can certainly be bad for you: "Cultivate a frolicsome enthusiasm in the morning to counter stiffness, and cautiousness in the evening to avoid hurting yourself. And at any time, if you start feeling uncommonly strong, flexible, and frisky, be careful. That's when it?s easy to go too far."
In these days when most books are more cheaply made than ever, it's nice to see a volume like this that's built to last; the glossy text paper gives the book the physical heft and authority to match the value of the content. Jennifer Roberson is the author of the Sword-Dancer Saga and the Chronicles of the Cheysuli, and collaborated with Melanie Rawn and Kate Elliott on the historical fantasy The Golden Key, a finalist for the World Fantasy Award. She has also published three historical novels, and several in other genres. An exhibitor and breeder of Cardigan Welsh Corgis, she lives on acreage in Northern Arizona with eight dogs and two cats. Amazingly Bad

This is a story about a spoiled, self-centered brat, who grows up to be a spoiled, self-centered, whiny man, and in the end gets everything he doesn't deserve.

*Spoilers below*

Kellin, the main character, is the second-to-last in the Cheysuli prophecy of the firstborn which threads through the entire series. He carries the blood of all the necessary races in his veins, except for the Ihlini.

Through most of the book, he uses the fact that his father is a prophet off somewhere, instead there with him, to act out in the most egregious ways... and no one stops him. As a man, he acts like a spoiled child, and everyone lets him, because he is a prince! He kills a few people... whines about his father never being there... whines some more... decides that no one loves him because his father wasn't there, and that he hates the world...

But it's the last book in the series! Somehow he must acquire the tainted Ihlini blood... but how? Through the most incredible, unbelieveable series of coincidences I have ever labored through in a fantasy book, that's how. So, 1) He happens to be making his way kind of toward the stronghold of the evil Ihlini, Lochiel. 2) Lochiel's daughter, Ginevra, miraculously happens to be mostly normal, despite growing up isolated in a tower with servants who are too cowed to speak, an insane demon-worshipper father, an insecure, jealous mother, and frequent contact with the equally insane Sekar. 3) Kellin comes across some nice guy near the stronghold who offers him food and drink. Coincidentally, it's an Ihlini who is on his way to marry Lochiel's daughter, Ginevra. Kellin realizes suddenly that the guy is Ihlini, they engage in a cheesy epic battle, and Kellin kills Ihlini guy but sustains grave injuries and topples into a nearby river which 4) washes him up into Lochiel's stronghold, where it turns out he has 5) amnesia, which luckily enables him to 6) completely change personality so that 7) Ginevra can fall in love with him, and he with her, because 8) she thinks he's the guy she's supposed to marry and with whom she will thwart the prophecy due to the fact that 9) no one in the stronghold has ever met Ihlini guy and 10) despite the statement that Lochiel "carefully researched his pedigree", he apparently never thought to get a physical description of any kind, nor send any messenger sorts to actually meet the guy. Oh, and Lochiel does perform a test to make sure Kellin is really the Ihlini fiance, using the guy's lifestone, but 11) Kellin passes because of the power of his blood. So, Kellin and Ginevra make a baby, kill evil father, and hie back to Homana. Meanwhile, the author (I mean, "the gods") has been killing off every male with royal blood under the age of 40 throughout the entire book. So at the end we get a cameo from Kellin's great aunt and uncles (Hart, Colin, Keely, Sean) who all come in and say, "Well, most of our children are dead, so why don't you just rule all our lands when we die." The End.

It also really bothered me that there are some gaping holes that never get explained. First of all, why exactly can't Aiden ever see Kellin? Because he would want to be with him? So? Does this mean that if Aiden had at least had contact with Kellin at some point over the years, Kellin wouldn't have been traipsing around close to Lochiel's stronghold to start this remarkable chain of coincidences that fulfill the prophecy? Very unclear. Second, what killed Blaise's lir, after all? Lochiel's minion who tried to capture Kellin later? The lion throne?

I am so happy to finally have the complete set. I have had bks 1-6 for years, but have never been able to get hold of the last 2. Every secondhand dealer in Adelaide had my name down for them, but no luck. Thank you Amazon! But to the books... I have never been so caught up in a world as this. Jennifer Roberson paints the characters so clearly, and the story is so wonderfully told. Through the series the Cheysuli go from triumph to tragedy and back again. I have found myself crying in some parts and almost yelling in victory in others! The best aspect was that I never knew exactly how things would turn out. There was always some twist just when I thought I had it sorted. I managed to devour bk 7 & 8 in a day and a half. If you're looking for something to read anytime read Chronicles of the Cheysuli.
