Outstanding example of good pedagogy

Most EM texts out there are overpriced and underwritten. They use color drawings and shiny, glossy pages to make up for lack of content. Shadowitz's book is the exact opposite: it's a dover edition, which means it's cheap and doesn't look as good. But this is one of those cases in which you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
Shadowitz is everything a serious student would like: it covers 1st/2nd year electromagnetism with great detail. It covers many topics, from basic electrostatics and vector analysis, to radiation theory and special relativity. The explanations are always kept clear. A physical context is always provided. Many solved examples are scattered throughout the text. The problems are instructive and odd-numbered ones have solutions at the end of the book. I simply cannot feel sorry that not all books are as good as this one. Although with most Dover books you get what you pay for (which isn't much), this book is an exception. Even if you're studying advanced EM and are using, say, Jackson's text, Shadowitz's text makes a great companion.
I have a few minor quibbles with the book, mainly its use of SI units, but Shadowitz provides appendices which explain how to convert between the various systems.

Electromagnetics Explained

"The Electromagnetic Field" is the best book on electromagnetics I have read. Shadowitz treats electrostatics and magneostatics in a interwoven manner rather then in two parallel strands which makes it easier to digest the information as you can compare and contrast the two while they are still fresh in your mind.

Included also are two chapters on special relativity, an introduction to tensors and electrodynamics, and of course Maxwell's Equations. Answers to the odd number problems are in the back of the book which is extremely helpful for someone trying to learn this on their own. There is also a chapter on radiation which is one of the best introductions on the subject I have found.

I would recommend if one can find it "Basic Electromagnetic Theory" by Demetrius Paris and F. Kenneth Hurd. It is a good supplemental text although not absolutely necessary. Also check out MIT Professor Walter Lewin's video lectures, they are very informative and fun.

This book is very insightful and for the price it cannot be beat.

Comparing this book to David Griffiths Electrodynamics (3rd Edition).

I would choose Shadowitz over Griffiths, if you have to pick just one. Griffith's book is good in its own way and the one most used in colleges but I do think Shadowitz's treatment is more appealing to my mind. Shadowitz's chapters on relativity and tensors is more thorough and Shadowitz's introduces both the Minkowski and Loedel diagrams, he also has chapters on electric circuits and transmission lines that Griffiths doesn't really cover.

Shadowitz does admit and I would agree he tries to appeal to the physicist and engineer, so maybe I am biased being an engineer to his approach, but Shadowitz does introduce a different approach then Griffiths for better or worse as both have their strengths and weaknesses.

If price alone is the deciding factor then it is a no brainer to go with Shadowitz's book as it is considerably less expensive.

Great Reference Manual at Minimum

I am a graduate student in Physics and have found this to be a wonderful reference manual to the "Jackson" graduate text. Shadowitz offers great explanations for sometimes complicated mathematical terms. Additionally, he gives valuable, indepth examples for tensors and makes no illogical or complicated jumps in his derivations of other mathematical formulae.

But not in British North America. Between the founding of Jamestown in 1607 and the start of the American Revolution in 1775, the colonies experienced only one notable revolt, on South Carolina's Stono River in 1739, and it lasted a single day. Yet, writes Peter Charles Hoffer, as brief as this event was, historians have misunderstood it--and have thus overlooked its deeper significance.

In Cry Liberty, Hoffer provides a deeply researched and finely nuanced narrative of the Stono River conflict, offering uncomfortable insights into American slavery. In particular, he draws on new sources to reexamine this one dramatic day. According to conventional wisdom, recently imported African slaves-warriors in spirit and training-learned of an impending war between England and Spain. Seeking freedom from Spanish authorities, the argument runs, they launched a well-planned uprising in order to escape to Florida. But Hoffer has mined legislative and legal records, land surveys, and first-hand accounts to identify precisely where the fighting began, trace the paths taken by rebels and militia, and offer a new explanation of its causes. Far from a noble, well-crafted revolt, he reveals, the slaves were simply breaking into a store to take what they thought was their due, and chance events put them on a path no participant had originally intended. The truth is a far less heroic, but far more of a human tragedy.

Richly researched, crisply told, and unflinchingly honest, this book uncovers the grim truth about the violent wages of slavery and sheds light on why North America had so few slave rebellions.

Historiacl Human Honest look at America slave beginning

A research (inquest) into the probable events of slave activity which carried onward till the Civil War. The 150th anniversary of that war is a great time to look at this slave conflict. "Cry Liberty" covers much slave activity in early 18th century near Charles Town (Charleston),SC. The author has done an intellectual work in gathering research and visiting (photos in book) the area to attempt to make a determination if the Stono River slave rebellion was planned or an chance accident. As an unbiased writer, he looks between the previously written lines, the culture, Colonial needs, status of people, misinformation, economics of the area, fear, religion, politics, and even land surveys. So well researched and footnoted that reading more on this "rebellion" seems needless. It's not a textbook, but it is solid nonfiction, worthy of an educated look.

The uprising of 1739 was almost silenced for 2 3/4 centuries. It is a story worth reading. Slave activity was little different then than in 1861 when, let's face it, slavery divided America, north to south. Was Stono really a prequel to that slavery rebellion? Or was it simply a case of "chattel stampede?"

1 AT HUTCHENSON'S STORE- The revolt's beginning place and its likely composition.
2 INHUMAN BONDAGE- Slaves by law, creation, color, economic need as rice field labor. Slaves were mobile.
3TERROR IN THE NIGHT- Ditch digging slaves kill whites (23 total in the end) but began in a search for food and drink. Death & mayhem, even slave against slave. Like white vs white in Civil War.
4 ON PON PON ROAD- The road was slave constructed in 1739. Weary slaves marched, Florida freedom bound, rested, the beginning to their end. Sever times black deaths compared to white.
5 NEVER FORGET- "But the memory of Stono among the whites was quickly recast in the face of the necessities of the colonial economy."--author Hoffer. Slavery & blood had left its mark.
EPILOGUE: The author wraps it up well.

Well Documented bit of History on the Low Country

Let me say I was attracted to this book for two reasons; I am an amateur history buff and I happen to live very close to where the events in the story occurred.

The author made a very enjoyably read story unfold without stating in the typical dogmatic fashion of many educators that he/she has some new clues without substantiating or documenting the reason for their position. The author is a professor at the University of Georgia and has written several other books and many articles on the similar time frame in US history. The author also avoided the one thing in the book he notes many others do, which record a particular fact and then work backward to try to come out with a definite scenario to explain the incident. The author gives several reasons for how things may actually have occurred without being dogmatic about his conclusions. The book was extensively documented throughout with notes and references at the bottom of each page to which they referred. Let me say this is a rather small book in both physical dimensions and also length [173pp] and were it a work of fiction, I would certainly rank it a novella rather than a novel. The upside of that is that it can be easily read in one long or two short readings.

The author sets the tone for his work in the opening paragraph: "The only large scale rebellion in British North America occurred on a single day, from very early Sunday morning to late afternoon, on September 9, 1739. The setting was similarly limited - a store, a bridge, nearby plantations, and a road along the North Branch of the Stono River known as Pon Pon at the time but [now known as US-17 or alternatively Savannah Hwy when heading south from Charleston and conversely called Charleston Hwy when heading north from Savannah].

The author included some obvious facts known to any amateur history buffs as "Without slaves, Carolina would never have been profitable enough to merit colonization." Yet he also explained many interesting observations as "To show deference to whites, ...slave speech was often slowed or mumbled, or spoken with a glance to the side or down. This was a defense mechanism the enslaved learned in Africa, where it was a sign of respect for young people to avoid meeting the gaze of their elders." He also noted that the sex ratio in the late 1730's of slaves was 1.7 males for each female, which made females far more valuable to male slaves but not necessarily to slave owners who felt they couldn't produce as much heavy work as males. This along with a myriad of other minor facts is what made the book interesting and hard to put down. I heartily recommend this book.

This was a very interesting read for a history student as it really does try to create a narrative on an event we know little about. It is a defining work whose insights are worth the read but its particular type of historical narrative is worthy of note and study in itself.

This volume reproduces two rare catalogs of such stencils, manufactured ca. 1918 and ca. 1920 by H. Roessing of Chicago.

Good Resorce book for Victorian stencil designs

This book has many beautiful stencil designs and is a good resource book for the professional stenciler. The designs are all copy right free. The only complaint I have is that some of the designs are printed very small and it can be quite difficult to enlarge it to the right size. Also some of the designs can be a little difficult for a beginner to cut themselves.This book is more suited for a professional or someone very experience in cutting their own stencils.

Cache of Design for Decorative Painters

2289 Traditional Stencil Designs is the reprinting of two catalogues (circa 1918 & 1920) from "Excelsior" Fresco Stencils. It is a rich resource of ornamental motifs providing an invaluable record of American decorative tastes during the first quarter of the 20th Century. Restoration and Renovation enthusiasts will find some of the anonymous English and American inspired designs representative of the Aesthetic Movement and Early Arts and Crafts Movement useful for their projects. Lyrical and expressive motifs abound, along with French inspired friezes, Neo Classical laurel wreaths, architectural elements, festoons, medallions, rosettes, drops, cartouches, damask designs, and classic acanthus, egg and dart, and anthemion variations. The professional will delight in using document colorways to great affect. Subtle elegance of tone on tone designs produced from the 1880's to the turn of the century by Wm. Morris' original wood blocks are there for the masterly to emulate. These stencil designs are not for the faint of heart. They are small and do not have instructions. Many suites of companion designs offering wall, ceiling, and frieze groupings abound, but only for the practiced eye to locate. There are no arrows pointing the way. This book may be utilized to it's best advantage by professional artists, designers, and experienced stencilers who possess both a projector and a knowledge of document design. However, one needn't be a Renzo Mongiardino to produce a satisfying result. I was slow to warm to the book due to what I feel are a good many "dated" and clumsy designs that no wizard could dazzle. If only 25% of 2286 designs are of use to me, I'm content. I now own two copies. One for the projector, and one for the resource library. The cover art typifies the best of the book's content. It is not a fluke or teaser cover. Those finding this style of motif to their liking, will also enjoy the book's content.

Great Resource for Designers

This book is chock full of great Victorian design. It has cartouches (ornamental borders), patterns, single filligree elements, and the best part is that they are all royalty free. You will need to scan the elements and clean them up a bit, but this book is a fantastic resource for the "flourish" trend that is going on in graphic design right now.

Highly recommended.

About the Author
Hermann Kopetz received his PhD in physics "sub auspiciis praesidentis" from the University of Vienna, Austria in 1968. After eight years in Industry he accepted in 1978 an appointment as a Professor for Computer Process Control at the Technical University of West-Berlin, moving to the Technical University of Vienna in 1992. Kopetz is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Science, Fellow of the IEEE, and is a member of the Information Society Advisory Group (ISTAG), advising the European Commission in Brussels in the domain of information technology since 2008. In June 2007 he received the honorary degree of Dr. honoris causa from the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France. Kopetz is the chief architect of the time-triggered technology for dependable embedded Systems and a co-founder of the company TTTech. The time-triggered technology is deployed in leading automotive and aerospace applications and has been selected by NASA for the Orion Spacecraft.

A useful book on time-triggered techniques

I found this book very useful. Despite the general title, Hermann Kopetz is mainly concerned with time-triggered techniques. This approach is becoming increasing popular with developers of real-time systems because it has been found to result in very predictable system behavior and, hence, can help to improve system reliability. This book was one of the first to be published in this area. It provides a considerable amount of useful information.

Outstanding for both practitioners and students

This book is exactly what I have been waiting for.

I started to work as a programmer for Boeing in 1985, went to grad school, worked at a research lab, then am in the academe. Along the way, I have gotten exposed to real-time computing in bits and pieces on a good number of projects. But none of them required me to get very deep into real-time computing, and I have never had a class in it. But I have been meaning to learn more, and in a systematic way, for some time.

So, from that context, it was with great anticipation that I learned of Prof. Kopetz's new edition (2ed). He is without question one of the top researchers in the area of fault-tolerant real-time computing, based on his long record of publishing in DSN and other top publication venues. He has worked with the auto industry literally for decades, and has recently branched out. So is is very applied and "down to earth". Ergo, my anticipation.

This book did not disappoint this applied practitioner, researcher, and instructor. It had the gamut of topics, with a focus on time-triggered technologies, ranging from global time, models, fault-tolerance, real-time communication, real-time operating systems, and scheduling. All concrete and "meaty" topics. There were also a number of topics that seem very important to architecting and engineering a real-time system, including simplicity (that one surprised me, but made a lot of sense in hindsight), system design, and validation. It also had good material on very timely applied research concerns: an entire chapter on the "Internet of Things" (IoT), and "cyber-physical systems" issues were spread throughout the book.

I strongly recommend this book for either practitioners who, like me, need or want to learn more about real-time systems (and more systematically than one could learn by a smattering of tutorial and research papers). I also would recommend it for a senior undergraduate or a graduate class. Indeed, I may use it for half of the material in a seminar class next school year, depending on how I decide what topics I really want to cover.

As a graduate student,I used this book for work on real time communication and time triggered architecture.I must say,the book is very well organised and easy to read. The concepts presented in this book are all practical and very helpful for real time system practioners. This book also helps students to gain overall understanding of the real time systems and ongoing research projects. I found the chapters on Real time model, real time communication and time triggered architecture very helpful for my research and the case studies on different time triggered architecture were very useful. If you are looking to dive into real time systems or taking a course on real time concepts or want to enhance your knowledge on real time system to take your research to next level, I highly recommend this book for you.

This kindlebook of Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy covers information such as the top of jobs in advertising and some of the people he hired into advertising. For instance, he recalls hiring a 40 year old copywriter who changed jobs eleven times. Creative directors, researchers, account executives, brand managers, directors, and copywriters are some of the jobs mentioned in his book. Ogilvy also mentioned about his job assignment where he advised Omega, a watch company in Switzerland, about their advertising (and of course much more is included in this kindlebook).

Let's face it, Ogilvy made great headway for the advertising industry. I'd even go as far as saying that his advertising methods are among the best the world has ever seen.

If you're new to the business, interested in the business, or even an old ad dog running out of tricks, you need to own this book. The best part about this book has got to be the visual references of some of the most successful ad campaigns since the dawn of advertising. If you don't take away some new ideas, you need to read it again.

Some of the techniques might be slightly outdated, but you shouldn't rely too heavily on one book for inspiration and information anyway. Also check out

Worth reading

So my boss recomended me to read this book, and told me everyone that works in the advertising business should know about mr. Ogilvy. And he is right, everybody should know who this man is, and I can see why he was so successful in his time. The core content in this book probably still applies, but this book was written in 1985, and I think we can all agree that the advertising business has evolved rapidly during this period. I would recomend all to read this just to know the history of this intelligent man, and I would recomend everybody to read this book if you are looking for an equally good book, with more updated information: Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This: The Classic Guide to Creating Great Ads.
