Vilem Flusser was born in Prague in 1920. After emigrating to Brazil and then to France, he embarked on an influential career as a lecturer and writer on language, design, and communication. He died in 1991.

Man's fate in information society

This slender booklet is a collection of short, late essays by the cosmopolitan thinker Vilem Flusser. Originally from the Czech Republic he fled to Brazil at the beginning of the Second World War and returned to Europe only in the early 1970s. He died in a car crash in 1991. Writing in German, Portuguese, and French, Flusser remained unpublished in English during his lifetime. In fact, the book reviewed here was the very first to be made accessible to an English readership. Meanwhile, based on as yet a very small selection of translated work, he has acquired a kind of a cultstatus with cognoscenti as an iconoclastic, clairvoyant linguistic philosopher and media theorist. Flusser's big theme is the transition from a pre-industrial to an industrial and, onwards, to an information society. In that process, spanning a mere 300 years, our relationship with our environment, increasingly populated by `non-things', by artificial intelligences and robotic machines, has been (and continuous to be) fundamentally altered. What happens when human beings morph from being productive, shape-giving artisans to abstract calculators, pressing keys on a keyboard, when our existential concerns shift from things to information? An interesting, ambiguous reciprocal dependency sets in: "the robot only does what the human being wants, but the human being can only want what the robot can do." Hence, humans become `functionaries' of the programmed tools they have created, inscribing themselves into a kind of (hopefully) benign totalitarianism governed by potentially endless but pre-programmed choice. Flusser's perspicaciousness in anticipating an emerging, virtual, omnidirectionally transparant society is admirable. Although "The Shape of Things" is a slim booklet, it is very difficult to do justice to Flusser's ideas in the space of a short review. Flusser's way of communicating complex ideas is highly idiosyncratic. His idiom is more journalistic than scholarly: he uses clear and simple language in very short, punchy essays. There are no references to other thinkers or to secondary literature. His argument is characterized by unexpected twists, linking the mundane to the exotic, relying often on clever etymological and linguistic reasoning. The style is terse, at times to the point of abruptness. Flusser is a combative thinker, not afraid to take provocative positions to tease his readers. Sometimes there is a clenched teeth kind of wittiness. This book is not a full-fledged, methodically argued `philosophy of design' but a series of elliptical, thought-provoking essays intent on redefining the debate on what makes (and keeps) us human in a world engulfed by immaterial objects and smart robots.

I bought this because the first essay in the book was one of my favorites, 'On the Word Design' The whole book is of a similar style-- aggressive, insightful, fresh commentary on Design, its relation to Art and Technology.

About the Author
A.W. Tozer embarked upon a lifelong pursuit of God at the age of 17 after hearing a street preacher in Akron, Ohio. He was a self-taught pastor, writer, and editor whose powerful messages continue to grip the hearts and stir the souls of today's believers. He penned more than 45 books, including the classics The Pursuit of God, The Knowledge of the Holy, and The Purpose of Man.

Reverend James L. Snyder (www.jamessnyderministries.com) is an award-winning author whose writings have appeared in more than 80 periodicals and 15 books. He is recognized as an authority on the life and ministry of A.W. Tozer. His first book, In Pursuit of God: The Life of A.W. Tozer, won the Reader's Choice Award in 1992 by Christianity Today. Because of his thorough knowledge of Tozer, James was given the rights from the A.W. Tozer estate to produce new books derived from over 400 never-before-published audio tapes. James and his wife live in Ocala, Florida.

A Prophet for TODAY!

For me personally this is the best book I have ever read by Tozer. As you know many called Tozer a prophet to the Church, of his day. However, everything Tozer writes about HAS a direct application to today's Church as well. I can only hope and pray that Tozer's burden touches the Church before it is to late.

In this book Tozer breaks down what a prophet is, and is called to do. This does not fit very well with many people today CALLING THEMSELVES prophets but it FITS very well with what the Bible tells us about prophets.

In some ways it is Tozer's autobiography of his calling and ministry as a prophet to the Church, as well as a good teaching on "Biblical" prophets. He looks at Moses, Abraham, Elijah, Ezekiel and others, and their ministry. But IF applied to our need today it could bring us out of the mess we have gotten into.

I've recently "discovered" A.W.Tozer as a truly insightful Christian author. He is a rare jewel in that he is able to communicate complex principles in very profound and eloquent ways. This book is a compilation of his sermons, so I'm told by the foreword but you get a sense that it was a book that was written chapter by chapter.

His message to the Body of Christ is why we need the Voice of the Prophet in our midst today like in days of old. There are plenty of books and so-called revivals, all kinds of Bible studies and various formats for Christians to learn but somehow we have lost the essense of what it means to please God and live a life worthy of the calling God has placed upon it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who desires to understand the true purpose and fulfillment of the office of God's Prophet to his people.

For years, I have used a tattered, falling apart copy of the original printing of Cole's book. This new volume is very welcome. Combining the vast majority of the four earlier books, it is an affordable and useful volume. Cole's research and drawings have stood the test of time and this is still one of the best books on the subjects. I am very happy to have the copy and suspect it, too, will serve many years of long service!

According to the irreverent Bike Snob NYC (Bike Snob: Systematically and Mercilessly Realigning the World of Cycling), the nom de guerre of Eben Weiss, the main thing commuters want is "To be happy, and to not get killed." And in this hilarious faux-epic volume, the author uses the Bible as a loose template for how cyclists and cars can, and should, all get along. Though there's some take-home advice, such as driving behaviors to avoid and which kind of bike to buy, most of the book is a rollicking window into urban cycling from a self-professed "smug dork." There are several extended glossaries--in the annals of Annoying Cyclist Behavior, Weiss describes the differences between "salmoning," "shoaling," and "wheelsucking." And sidebars include Understanding Bipedal Idiocy and The Dachshund of Time. Occasionally, the author flips into an earnest, philosophical voice; though his description of his experience on 9/11 and his rant about the pointlessness of dressing up for work are thought-provoking, their tone is somewhat out of place in what is, at heart, a truly fun and witty ride. The book shines when the author combines his self-deprecation on behalf of all cyclists ("we are kind of the nerds in the school cafeteria of transportation") with heavier topics ("when it comes to integrating our transportation, we're as closed-minded as the racists of yesteryear"), creating a call to arms for the ultimate commuting goals: transcendence and "highways of happiness." - Publishers Weekly

Even the Best Can Strike Out

I am a huge fan of Bike Snob's blog and loved his first book and so eagerly looked forward to this one. It is the only physical book (as opposed to Kindle edition) I purchased this year because I wanted this book to sit on my bookshelf. Sadly, I was very disappointed. There is nothing wrong with this book, I certainly wasn't offended by it, but it just wasn't funny. It was so not funny that about half way through I stopped and wondered if I had gotten it wrong, if in fact it was supposed to be a serious book. Unfortunately, there simply isn't enough substance to support a serious book. By all means, read Bike Snob's blog and buy his first book. I suggest skipping this one and hoping the next is better.

More obnoxious than witty or funny

I wanted to like this book. I'm a novice cyclist who enjoys using a bike for commutes, when permittable, and I also enjoy books that are funny and can intelligently rip into a culture. However, "The Enlightened Cyclist" fails. Instead of anything funny, smart, or even useful, this book is mainly just a writer trying to see how many gags he can yank out of groups of people.

A few pokes at cycling stereotypes? Fine. But the author goes overboard with that to the point I felt sorry for each and every group, and when that's done he has the audacity to declare religion false, as if that has anything to do with the point of this book. Frankly, I'm left with the feeling that I should be considered stupid for being spiritual, interested in the environment, or even a bike owner. There's a fine line between being funny and intelligently honest and just being plain mean.

The writing itself seems to depend on being snappy. Yes, the author is a fine writer who can certainly turn a phrase, but his problem is that he ultimately has nothing to say. Thirty pages in and I'm already sick of his complaints and advice and their heaping dose of "Look how funny I can be!"

The book was ultimately disappointing, and I'm pretty sure I got a headache from just trying to read it. This might be ultimately for the cycling cult, but I found it a waste of time.

Funny but with a serious point

This is a quite clever book. It's written in an easy, conversational style, like you'd expect to see in a less formal format. I liked that, especially when dealing with the subject matter. More importantly, I felt it a fair discussion of cycling as *a* mode of transport. Instead of being rah-rah pro cycling all the time, or boo cars, the author takes a pragmatic view - bicycles, cars, walking, buses, etc., are all viable alternative tools for the right job. He also discusses the common pitfalls bikers run into- from people following too close, to salmoning, to some idiot drivers.

Overall, it's written by a biker, for a bike loving crowd. I did really appreciate the fair-minded approach, and I think even non-cyclists would get something from reading this book - a better understanding of cycling and the particular pitfalls that come with it.

I just finished Fired and really liked it. Regina has been fired as a receptionist to make way for the vice presidents niece. As she is leaving she meets Richard Sellers in the elevator. Richard is one of the wealthiest investor and has been trying to buy this place she works at. For the past 6 months they have had a pleasant and polite banter but they both feel the attraction. What happens when you think it might be the final goodbye? You have to read and see...

I really liked the story. It was quick and sexy and thought that it flowed really well. Richard is FINE. Grrr, he seemed really dominate and I wish we could have pursued more on this story between them. He does have a secret but he had me at....

"I don't know how else to say it. I've been drawn to you, Regina. I'm absolutely mad about you. I didn't know what else to do."

Yep, I forgave him!!!

Really, you should read this. It is short and sexy and enjoyed it immensely

Regina has been fired from her job and is trying to hold it together. She can't wait to get on the elevator so everyone will stop looking at her, but such is her luck, the elevator is occupied. Richard, the British guy who is trying to buy the company she was just fired from and the man she thinks of when she is alone at home in her bed, just happens to be in the elevator. He takes her elbow and pulls her into the elevator. He tries to get her to laugh and realize that this isn't the end of the world. He offer to take her to lunch. Where will this day end? With some HOT results? Read it to find out...

Well written with a good plot. Felt really short to me. It had some steamy parts but for some reason didn't feel as intense.
