The Craftsman's Handbook (Dover Art Instruction), by Cennino Cennini

This is D. V. Thompson's definitive English translation of Il Libro dell'Arte, an intriguing guide to methods of painting, written in fifteenth-century Florence. Embodying the secrets and techniques of the great masters, it served as an art student's introduction to the ways of his craft.
Anyone who has ever looked at a medieval painting and marveled at the brilliance of color and quality of surface that have endured for 500 years should find this fascinating reading. It describes such lost arts as gilding stone, making mosaics of crushed eggshell, fashioning saints' diadems, coloring parchment, making goat glue, and regulating your life in the interests of decorum — which meant shunning women, the greatest cause of unsteady hands in artists. You are told how to make green drapery, black for monks' robes, trees and plants, oils, beards in fresco, and the proper proportions of a man's body. ("I will not tell you about the irrational animals because you will never discover any system of proportion in them.") So practical are the details that readers might be tempted to experiment with the methods given here for their own amusement and curiosity.
Today artists are no longer interested in specific directions on keeping miniver tails from becoming moth-eaten. The Craftsman's Handbook, in which these are ordinary parts of the artist's work, appears quaint and naïve to us. And that is much of its charm. But when we remember the magnificent mosaics, paintings, and frescoes these methods produced, the book takes on an even greater value as a touchstone to another age.
"Recommended to the student of art." — Craft Horizons.
"Obviously of great merit." — Art Material Trade News.
"Delightful flavor." — New York Herald Tribune.
Recommended in Harvard List of Great Books on Art, Shaw's List of Books for College Libraries.

Cennino's Handbook, Still Illuminating
By Margie Burns
Art, genuine art, is a pleasure not only in the thrill of color and line but in its procedure and materials. In fifteenth-century Florence, an artist named Cennino d'Andrea Cennini compiled a handbook for contemporary and future painters to consult in their drawing and painting from the beginning, in choosing their ingredients, mixing their paints and preparing their paper or cloth for painting on.

Unlike the making of sausage, the elements of creating art are a delight. Here are some how-to's excerpted from this wonderful little book (translated by Daniel V. Thompson, Jr., 1933, reprinted numerous times by Dover), still vibrant five hundred years after it was composed. The details also unwittingly reveal something of contemporary everyday life, where the art came from.

To paint on a panel, you start with a little boxwood panel nine inches square, washed with clear water and rubbed and smoothed down. "And when this little panel is thoroughly dry, take enough bone, ground diligently for two hours, to serve . . . take less than half a bean of this bone, or even less. And stir this bone up with saliva. Spread it all over the little panel with your fingers; and, before it gets dry, hold the little panel in your left hand, and tap over the panel with the finger tip of your right hand [presumably Cennino was right-handed] until you see that it is quite dry. And it will get coated with bone as evenly in one place as in another."

Wondering where to find the bone? "You must know what bone is good. Take bone from the second joints and wings of fowls, or of a capon; and the older they are the better. Just as you find them under the dining-table, put them into the fire; and when you see that they have turned whiter than ashes, draw them out, and grind them well on the porphyry."

Parchment comes from sheep or goats; to draw on sheep parchment, the artist lightly inscribes the background of bone with a sharp point. "On the parchment you may draw or sketch with this [stylus] of yours if you first put some of that bone . . . all over the parchment . . . dusting it off with a hare's foot." To add ink, "shade the folds with washes of ink; that is, as much water as a nutshell would hold, with two drops of ink in it; and shade with a brush made of minever tails . . ."

"And if you ever make a slip, so that you want to remove some stroke made by this little lead, take a bit of the crumb of some bread, and rub it over the paper, and you will remove whatever you wish."

The artist gives equally clear and detailed instructions for whittling goose quills to get a sharp point for ink drawing, to tempering paper with several coats of glue (tempera), to making clear tracing paper by scraping kid parchment and treating it with linseed oil. White lead is a basic ingredient, so is saliva. (Saliva combined with lead poses a health hazard; painters often died young.) Colors come largely from minerals, and the author explains how to pulverize and mix minerals to produce the paints desired.

Cennino explains every procedure in gessoing, stamping on gold, working on cloth, painting on velvet (yes, it goes way back), gilding saints' haloes, designing brocades, and embellishing with gold or tin. Much of a loss for art history, his instructions for mosaics are regrettably long since gone.

The author also makes some opening remarks designed to put art in context in creation. Much as he loves art, Cennino subordinates it to thinking, and he never loses sight of the fact that it is work. After the fall, "Man . . . pursued many useful occupations, differing from each other," some "more theoretical than others; they could not all be alike, since theory is the most worthy." Art is a "labor of love," but it is still labor.

Still, his praise for art, being genuine, is as strong as any I have ever read: "Close to [theory], man pursued . . . an occupation known as painting, which calls for imagination, and skill of hand, in order to discover things not seen, hiding themselves under the shadow of natural objects, and to fix them with the hand, presenting to plain sight what does not actually exist. And it justly deserves to be enthroned next to theory, and to be crowned with poetry."

instruction manual for historic painting
By Kirsten M. Houseknecht
This little gem contains a great deal of use for anyone trying to duplicate authentic, medieval /rennaisance painting techniques. The instructions on making egg tempera paints, for example, are extremely clear. This book may as well have "required reading" on the cover for anyone who is interested in painting, calligraphy, illumination or related fields in history and practice.

Please be aware! many techniques, pigments, and methods used in history were hazardous. many pigments in use in proffessional art workshops today are hazardous as well, but the Medeival artist did not have OSHA regulations and disclaimers. Please investigate the safety of ANY procedure or pigment before use.

This book is referenced by many other authors and webpages for their instructions, and can be used as Primary Documentation for most living history groups

Very comprehensive view of old art techniques
By A Customer
I found this book to be a very fascinating how-to manual. A lot of the terms, however, would have been lost on me if were not for my Making of Art Supplies class. This is definitely not a book for the beginner to pick up and start making art supplies. Very useful for the Renaissance Faire attendee looking for a way to polish up an artist character.

Brilliant!! Can't wait for more
By Erica Smith A One-Click Addict's Book Blog
4.5/5 Stars

Holy flippin cow I am in love with the Renegade Sons.
You love MC's?
Alpha males?
Down & dirty hot sex?
Badass bikers?
Chicks who take no s@#*?

This book is for you. I love that there's a bit of a twist on the tradition MC, I don't do spoilers so I'm not telling, just read this book!!

Jenna, aka Ice had a pretty rough childhood, an addict for a mother who ends up living in a MC her father is part of.
Her life goes downhill from there thanks to a sicko pedophile.

She's rescued at age 16 by another chapter who doesn't agree with her treatment.

Kidd's brother Chipper brings home a beat up 16yr old girl, who Chipper and his wife take on as their own, giving her a life.

Kidd is immediately drawn to her, knowing shes too young he stays away. Jenna falls in love with Kidd, but keeps it to herself, afterall he's much older and he's her best friend.

On her 18th birthday that changes, but not as expected.

Once she comes of age she has a couple options, become someones old lady, become a club whore or leave the club.

Club life is all she's known, this is the first real family she's had and she won't give that up.

Jenna becomes a club whore, for six years Kidd has watched and waited for her, he wants her as his old lady but she wants no part of him or being someones property.

I can't tell you the ending, it would ruin it for you, but read this book, it's freaking amazing, I cannot wait for Preach & Daisy's story.

Raw and gritty?! Yeah, not so much.
By just another book lover
This book is described as “a raw and gritty story.” In someone’s dreams maybe. It is neither gritty nor raw. The characters may be likeable, but they’re definitely “B-movie” stereotypes. Definitely not bad-ass and not even a tiny bit scary. If real MCs were anything like the Renegade Sons, no one would be afraid of them.

I found the story to be strangely flat, bland and two-dimensional. Or maybe one-dimensional. The book is seriously lacking in description. We get a few descriptions of some of the characters which can be summed up as all the “good guys/gals” are beautiful and all the “bad guys/gals” are not. But there are very few if any descriptions of the environment around the characters. We don’t know what anything looks like. There are vague references to a nearby town and the people there, but the MC never interacts with them. The MC characters are just there in this vague, colorless world. Example, Chipper, Mindy and Jenna go to the clubhouse. Well, obviously not on the back of Chipper’s motorcycle, but what kind of car does Chipper have? Who knows. The authors see no reason to describe the world their characters live in. They seem to exist in a vacuum. And how do you write a “gritty, raw” book about an MC without once describing the bikes?!

In Chapter 1, the club president sends his son Chipper to check out the Mateland Chapter because there is “some s*** going down” such as the members are all stoned, stealing from the drug shipments, stealing club money, and raping underage girls on a regular basis. All of these are violations of the club charter. During the approximately 8-year time span of this book, neither daddy nor subsequent club pres Kidd addresses the issue of this rogue chapter. So much for all the incessant talk about the “club rules.” Kidd is all talk, no action. Or maybe he’s just a pansy-ass wuss.

And Kidd is totally clueless about what is going on. Brother Chipper is keeping secrets from Kidd, because he promised daddy he wouldn’t tell anyone. Because of course a bad-ass biker always keeps important secrets from his club pres. Uh-huh.

And then, there’s Kidd and Jenna. Kidd claims he loves Jenna. He shows this by screwing all the club whores in front of Jenna. Jenna is a foul-mouthed screaming shrew with the emotional maturity of a 12-year-old who claims to love Kidd and shows this by becoming a stripper and club whore and refuses to talk to Kidd for 6 years. And he lets her. Because he “loves” her. Then suddenly he tells her she is now his Old Lady and she says okay. Six years of pouting and being a bitch, and suddenly you’re over it? Just like that?!

And then Kidd hooked up with Sarah for a year or so, but then he doesn’t want her anymore. He is such a pansy-ass wuss, he can’t even manage to dump her ass. Then has an over-emotional tirade when she dies. Because that is apparently what bad-ass bikers do.

And what’s with that silly scene where Jenna shoots and kills Cary? Why are the bad-ass bikers just standing around while Cary chases Jenna with a knife instead of stopping Cary themselves? Because they had plenty of time. And guns. Reese has a gun. Jenna runs across the room and grabs his gun and shoots Cary herself. The MC guys talk a lot about killing people, but again, all talk, no action. Leave it up to the women to have to save themselves while the men just stand around being ineffective and indecisive. Or pansy-ass wusses.

I agree with everything Amy Blanchard said in her one-star review, but I am giving this two stars because I think the authors have potential. If they bother to put some effort into it. Or they could just continue to churn out cheesy silly books about fake MCs. Based on the number of 5-star reviews, there is a market for it.

By the way, as I read this book, I kept thinking I had read this story before. This bears a resemblance to Seize Me by Katie Mac. Both female leads are strippers, get raped, curse like sailors, drink like fish, take business classes online, and open businesses in town. I like Katie Mac’s book better.

I wanna be an Old Lady...... ;)
By DEVIL CAKES
Okay can I just say from the start that I LOVE this book! Move over Madeline Sheehan and make room for the Renegade Sons!

I LOVE good MC book as much as the next girl does. But This one has made my favorite list. I wanted Kidd to want me! I don't care age difference means nothing to me. WELL not with him anyways ;) But he only had Eyes for Jenna(Ice)Chandler.

The story starts off with Jenna, she's been brought up in an MC. Well dragged up is a better way of saying how she was brought up. Her childhood id horrific. Literally the stuff nightmares are made from. But all of that stops one day when she is saved by Chipper. Chipper is another biker who was to drop by his club. What he see's turns his stomach and Jenna is up and outta there with him,no questions asked.

He brings her back to his club. And at first she is terrified. But Chipper and his family and friends take her in with open arms. His wife and him treat her like a daughter they never had. She finally has the love she never had as a kid growing up.

And its with this MC family that she meets 'Kidd'. Kiddrick Jones is older then Jenna, but that doesn't stop her wanting him. From the moment she see's him she's having to wipe drool off her face LOL.

But he;s a decade older. and she's only 16. It can't happen. So poor Jenna has to sit by and watch while he does what bikers so best....

But Jenna doesn't stay a kid for long and as if over night our beautiful Jenna turns into a beautiful women. And man does Kidd ever notice. ONLY he isn't the only one who does ;)

Threw the years of them battling feeling things go down in the club that keeps them on there toes. In work and in life. This book has angst all the way threw it,and will keep you gripped from page one.

And if your like me you be stalking the girls for books two in the series ;)

First published in 1987, this comprehensive book covers a wide range of topics including numerous aspects of clinical exercise testing, normal and abnormal responses to cardiopulmonary testing, and updated information on clinical applications of exercise testing. The book instructs by using physiologic principles to explain abnormal responses to exercise caused by diseases that affect tolerance - a topic of interest to cardiologists, pulmonologists, and PM&R clinicians.
The first third of the book discusses exercise physiology, disease pathophysiology, test protocols, normal values, measurements and interpretation; the remainder of the book consists of 80 case presentations that serve as examples of how cardiopulmonary exercise testing can be used to diagnose diseases, their severity, and the effectiveness of treatment. All references have been updated.

Review

"When most people see the name Jack Daniels, they picture a whiskey bottle. But runners will think about the renowned coach and exercise physiologist. At 81, Daniels has had a bigger influence on training-for-running than anyone. Indeed, he might be considered the Albert Einstein of the sport. His 1998 book, Daniels' Running Formula, unlocked the mystery of appropriate training paces for runners of all abilities. His philosophy was simple: Do the minimum amount of work for the maximum payoff."

Runner’s World

“In one way or another, today’s serious runners abide by training principles rooted in Jack Daniels’ research and philosophy and outlined in his famous book, Daniels’ Running Formula.”

How to use this book if the science overwhelms you
By Running Deer
Before I start, a couple of pieces of information that may help. First off, I find the science in this book to be a bit overwhelming at times, and I've been teaching at the university level for more than twenty years--just not in the sciences. I have a doctorate and three master's degrees, and I still find my brain swimming when I try to make it through some of the scientific info. That's just the way it is--the science isn't for everyone, and you shouldn't give up on this book if the science sections don't make complete sense--just don't read them. The information isn't at all necessary for improving your running. It's cool to know if you do make it through, but it doesn't matter if you don't.

Second, I used the DRF ten years ago (at age 44) to go from an 18:55 5k to an 18:05 in about six months. I just got back into competitive running last year (after several years of doing ultras), and I had no real speed at all. After three or four months, I found I wasn't improving my times much, so I decided to give Daniels another go-round and bought the new edition. On November 1, 2014, I did a 6k in 24:52 (a 6:40 pace). Then I bought this book and started the 5k program, and in March of 2015 I did a 10k in 39:36 (a 6:23 pace). That pace, of course, would have been faster had I done just a 6k, so there is evidence in my experience that shows that this program works if you give it a chance.

Here's what I've done, and what I recommend to others to whom I've given this book. First off, you need a current running time for a specific distance. If you don't have one, go get one, either by signing up for a local 5k or going to a high school track and pushing yourself for a mile. And it has to be a decent effort on your part, not just a leisurely jogging time, otherwise this program will be useless to you. With your time, go to Table 5.1, VDOT values (page 81 in 3rd edition), and find your time, then find the associated VDOT, which is listed to the right and the left of all the times. For example, if you did a 49-minute 10k, your VDOT will be 41. That's the most important thing to know.

Now you need to choose a training program. I'm doing 5k, so I go to Chapter 11. If you're a very beginning runner, start on Phase 1, page 176, for 4 to 6 weeks. If you've been running but not necessarily pushing yourself hard, then start on Phase 2, page 180. You'll find there a full workout for you that can last as long as you want it to, and that will improve your times. Let's look at Week One of Phase 2. You start with a long run, then do an easy run with 10 strides, and then on the third day, you find your first quality workout: 2E (two miles easy run) + 2 sets of (8 x 200R w/200 jog) w/ 800 jog between sets + 2E. I sometimes modify the starting and ending 2E to either 1 mile easy or 1 1/2 miles easy, depending on time constraints, but the sprinting you'll want to keep. The question you have to answer now is what does 200R mean? For that, go to page 84, Table 5.2, for the Training intensities table.

There you'll find that since your VDOT is 41, you should be running each of these 200's at 51 seconds.

And that's really all you need to know. If your training says 2E + 5 x 1kT w/ 2 minutes rest + 2E, you're going to find that your pace for one kilometer at a 41 VDOT is 5:00 even. So you'll run a kilometer in five minutes, rest for two minutes, run a km in five minutes, rest for two minutes, etc. All of your paces are on pages 84-85, for Easy, Marathon, Threshold, Interval, and Repetition. Personally, I would recommend reading chapter four in which Daniels talks about each of these paces and what you're trying to accomplish with them, but it's not absolutely necessary for the training.

Keep in mind that after a few weeks the paces will probably become very easy for you, and then it's time to move to a new VDOT. Just be careful when you do so that you're not moving up too early--injuries and burnout can easily happen. Also, keep in mind that Daniels is a strong advocate of rest, and makes it clear that there's no problem making one or two of the E days complete rest days. I run six days a week, and rest one.

You'll notice that many of the workouts have strides indicated (+10 ST, for example). He defines strides on page 177, paragraph 4: "are not all out sprints but are light, quick runs that last about 10 to 15 seconds each, with about 45 seconds' rest after each stride."

Personally, I have read the whole book, and I'm glad I have, but I would recommend doing so after you have your running plan worked out. The scientific info supplements what you're doing, but you don't need to know it to improve as a runner. My strategy is simple, and I use index cards: I write down one week's worth of runs on a card, and then I write the two quality workouts on separate index cards to take to the treadmill with me in the winter, and to the track in the summer. And by the way, these workouts are wonderfully suited to the treadmill--once I set a speed on the treadmill, I have to maintain that pace for the entire time indicated.

I hope this helps! Have fun training!

Jack has done it again
By Peter Pfitzinger
Actually bought 2 copies of Daniels' Running Formula and gave one to a prominent coach here in New Zealand. The 3rd edition is up to Jack's usual high standard-no one else has his level of experience and insight. Would recommend this book to any runner wanting to improve performance.

Best Training Guide for Runners of ALL abilities!
By Jami
I consider myself relatively new to running, having only picked up the sport just over two years ago as a way to drop some excess weight. Little did I know how life changing it would be! I'm a 49 year old woman and have fallen in love with running. To date I've only ran two organized races, a 10k and a 5k, because I mostly run for myself and for the joy of it.

I log about 15-20 miles a week on average. This year, however, I plan to run my first half-marathon. When training for the 10k and 5k, I consulted other running friends and found training plans online that worked for me. Still, the more I ran, the more I wanted to learn about how to improve my running. I kept hearing about the Jack Daniels programs, so when I saw there was a new edition of the popular book out, I grabbed it! I couldn't be more pleased!

Jack Daniels lays it out in easy to read and follow language. He starts out with the ingredients to success which explains how we are all different, but that doesn't mean we each cannot be successful at running. No, we may not all become elite runners, but the personal achievements are the important part. As the book progresses, he covers training for all levels of runners and pretty much every type of training - from getting in shape to running a marathon - and everything in between! There are complete training programs in the book. I suppose it's the next best thing to having a personal coach, except that you don't get the motivation and personal review of your progress along the way.

Even if you're like me and simply enjoy running but are not ready to sign up for every organized race possible, this program will guide you into being the best runner you can be. I highly recommend it!
