The fundamentals.

Even at a time when a subject undergoes a revolution, and new directions keep coming, new methods; even brand new and different applications--- even then are there central ideas that are constant, the fundamentals. Within mathematics, approximation theory is such a field: In the past decade, we have seen a host of such new developments: wavelet approximations, fast computational algorithms with applications to turbulence, chaos and fractals; computational efficiencies from scaling similarities, and data compression; and new adaptive non-linear algorithms. The author Achieser of this Dover classic (first published by Ungar in 1956, and reprinted by Dover in 1992) is a pioneer in the approximation theory, and the book is still a very attractive first. I recommend it to students even today! Achieser's lovely book begins with the fundamentals on normed spaces, and it has the classical theorems of Weierstrass, Muntz, and Riesz. The other topics range from the incisive ideas of Tchebysheff and Haar to harmonic approximation. From extremal properties of transcendental functions to Wiener's general Tauber theorem, and more.

an encyclopedia of results in approximation theory

This should be on the reading list of every graduate student in control or signal processing. This book is an encyclopedia of results in approximation theory including Chebyshev approximation, harmonic analysis, and extremal properties of integral transcendental functions. The exposition is terse in some places and the proofs are sometimes sketchy, but the examples are really great. The focus on the ideas is excellent.

A guide to in-house graphic design using CorelDRAW.

Although not an extensive volume at 240 pages, this full-color book is a practical guide to useful techniques for creating professional graphic design work using CorelDRAW. The material included familiarizes the reader with the basic tools, features, and capabilities of the software, provides guidance on maximizing its potential, and instructs on how to turn good ideas into good designs and prepare the resulting designs for output.
The biggest strengths of the book are the instructions on customizing the CorelDRAW workspace, tools, and templates for a smooth workflow, and the advice on establishing the best practices to achieve specific results for a varied collection of projects. Other strong points are that the included step-by-step instructions, tips, and tricks are paired with practical examples of the typical work you are likely to create or encounter, and that the glossary of terms, the thorough index, and the troubleshooting section of the book are excellent resources for general referencing, cross-referencing, and finding fast and simple solutions to common issues you might need help with, respectively. Also, additional content for the tutorials and a very useful at-a-glance guide with an overview of the main features of CorelDRAW can be readily downloaded from the publisher's website. Likewise, even though the book is published as a paperback, its superior print and binding quality will withstand repeated consultation and use.
There are, however, two reasons why I don't give this book a five-star rating. Firstly, the material contains too many errors, including typos (even in the accompanying illustrations), and inaccurate references to the tools and terminology used, which in turn makes following the otherwise effortless tutorials a very tedious task on account of having to re-check the information and figure out the mistakes in the instructions before being able to obtain the expected results. Secondly, although the book provides a nice introduction to key design concepts (typography, color theory) and terminology (image type, file formats, resolution), the material presented only gets a superficial treatment, as do the tools and features of the software itself, and the scope of the book is partly limited to the creation of marketing and promotional materials of the desktop publishing type, such as business cards, flyers, postcards, brochures, web graphics, and so on. For this reason, I strongly recommend "CorelDRAW X6 The Official Guide" by Gary David Bouton as an excellent companion to this book, as it is a superb in-depth textbook, guide, and reference to the tools, features, and capabilities of CorelDRAW and some additional features of the Graphics Suite for X6 and even a couple of older versions--for anyone new to CorelDRAW, I even recommend it as required reading in order to maximize the usefulness of the material contained in this volume.
In a nutshell, this is a good introductory book on creating professional-looking promotional and marketing materials with CorelDRAW.

Good for publications, but not a manual/bible

This is a good book for someone that is new to Corel Draw, and needs to use Corel Draw for publications. The book is a mix of publication and graphic basics, nd how to implement those basics in Corel Draw. The book is not designed to be a manual on all the features of Corel Draw, and may not cover everything for publications either, but it definitely gets one started. If one needs to make a decision between buying Corel Draw and other software that might be cheaper and more simple to use, this book can make buying Corel Draw worthwhile because it gets you going on features and methods not brought upfront by Corel or in Corel's user manual that comes with the software.

The book have many examples, and those examples come with tutorials. However, the tutorials are design specific, and apply to the example. For instance, a logo is created of a lighthouse. You learn some features of Corel, but its not meant to show all the features of Corel. One drawback of the book is that it relies on keyboard shortcuts and does not tell you where to go in the application on many instances. But, I believe the book is more or less trying to go through the methodology of using Corel, not showing you a step by step for every function. If the book had more concentration on using the mouse and where to find features in the user interface, and for screen captures, I would have rated it a 5-star.

I didn't purchase Corel Draw for publications or brochures. But, with this manual, I think I can use Corel Draw for those tasks. And in case I will ever try that, this book will remain close by on my bookshelf.

Roger Wambolt has put together a great book explaining many of the intricacies of Corel Draw X6. He has an easy writing style and his instructions are easy to follow and understand. I would recommend this book to anyone with questions about the software.

Exercises are Useful, But Instructions aren't Easy to Follow

The book offers several exercises for helping students practice their pronunciation skills, yet is not organized in a way that's easy for teachers and students to quickly assess what they need to do for each exercise. It provides instructions in narrative form before each exercise and offers partner practice exercises in different areas of the book--not right on pages next to each other. The text is pretty dense. I would prefer seeing instructions in a list rather than in paragraph form so to break down the information so it can be followed more easily.

Beware! This Edition May be over 100 Years Old!

I am now speaking to you as an anatomist and as a professor of human gross anatomy -- Student Beware. This is not the book that you think it is.
Look carefully. Gray's Anatomy currently comes in two english editions. The British Version (now in its 39th edition) retails for about... The American Version (now in its 30th edition) retails for about ... If the edition you are looking at costs considerably less than those prices ASK YOURSELF WHY!. You are probably considering the "classic collectors edition" which is a reprint of the 1901 American Edition. There is nothing wrong with that edition, if you are interested in the history of science. However, much of the terminology has changed and in 100 years we have developed a much deeper understanding of human anatomy.
Know what you are buying. If you are a serious student of anatomy, you probably do not want this to be your first (or only) edition of Gray's Anatomy.

As good as you have heard.

Gray's Anatomy is a "classic" book on Anatomy. Unusual for a classic, it is everything you have heard. The drawings are beautiful, accurate, and interesting. At the same time, this book was a standard text for Anatomy since 1901. As such, the drawing are only part of this book. The book's main effort is to explanation human anatomy. It does so wonderfully and clearly, with words. The drawings are only there to help with the text's explanations.
A quick warning. Since this book has been around since before 1901, there are many, many different versions. Make sure you check the printing date of the one you buy. The human body has not changed since this first editions, but our access to it has. As such, while some of the earlier books are beautiful to look at, the later editions are more valuable as a reference tool.

Comprehensive information. Lacky illustrations....

I am a student and an emergency medical professional... The amount of information contained in this book is impressive and it is small enough to carry in a briefcase for reference. The text is clear and comprehensive. It has a through rundown of all the human systems and extremely detailed breakdowns of the human anatomy itself. Two things I'm not so impressed with, however - which are very important - are: 1. Illustrations are bountiful...but are in black and white and it is VERY hard to differentiate between structures....and little lines that point to specific structures dissappear in the drawing, instead of quickly mapping things out. 2. There are VERY few full size/system illustrations....for example, there is not a picture of the entire anterior/posterior/lateral skull, abdominal cavity, chest cavity, or appendages for quick reference...instead, all the illustrations are piece by piece...one page has the mandible, one the eye bones...it is all broken down into little sections. I recommend buying a large, detailed A&P book and just using this as a reference.

The title merely hints at the steamy and deliciously perverse interior of this erotic short. Vivian Vane has crafted a story of depraved degradation that matches or equals my previous favorite of hers 'Fertile Mistresses'. Can Meredii resist the Satyr's enticing musk? Can she resist the urge to breed? Will she save her friend and traveling companion from becoming just another servant to the Satyr's dark lusts?

Of course not! But that's why you're here, isn't it?

Actually made learning statistics possible for me.

As a Sociology Ph.D. student without much (okay, ANY) background in statistics, I found myself struggling to keep up with what the hell my professor was going over in the classroom. The required textbook assumed I knew (much) more than I actually did and it seemed like I was the only one in the world who had no idea what terms like regression and correlation meant.
What I needed was a solid textbook that would give me the skills and the confidence to catch me up to where my classmates were. Ritchey's style of presenting clear explanations and corresponding examples was invaluable in my understanding of the course concepts.
The textbook seems more appropriate for undergrads than it does grad students, but that was the level where I was at so it suited me just fine. It is certainly feasible to read a few chapters in a sitting without feeling like you're experiencing statistical overload. This textbook would probably be best read by grad students about to take a stats course in order to hit the ground running...
