Robert's for Dummies works!

This was actually for my wife, who is currently parliamentarian for a local non-profit organization, which she has some prior experience at. Nonetheless, as soon as the book arrived, she curled up and read it "cover to cover" and made a bunch of notes from it to share with others. Next thing I knew, she was putting her official Robert's Rules away in storage, so like many of the "Dummies" books, this seems to be the practical knowledge most of us actually need.

A writer who always seems to write to the left of mainstream where the tropes are left wriggling in the dust, Thea likes her tales a bit gritty, a little bit sexy, and always a little bit dark. Her favorite stories involve flawed, angsty beings who aren't necessarily human smack dab in the middle of a dark, unsettling circumstance with no choice but to kick their way through to the light.

Fast-paced mayhem!

I can go a long time between stories about vampires. I can also go a long time between stories with confronting sex.

But when I do read them I want them to be good, so I’m pleased I fell off the wagon and picked them up.

This is one such book. And to top off my luck it’s full of vampires AND sex. AND it’s told with a needle-point wit.

Told in the first person it’s the story of Jade, a young woman drawn into the world of vampires. Because we’re taken into her mind and heart we’re sucked (no pun intended) very quickly into the vortex of her fears and desires.

The pace never slackens; it’s top gear all the way. And dare I say I’m liking her choice of vampire mate!

WHOAAAAALY MOLEY!! WOW! Just...WOW! What a fangtastic vampire tale! It is very intriguing, sexy, mystical, appalling, hot, magical, appealing, creepy, funny, snarky, shocking, passionate, awesome and oh so fangelicious all rolled up into this storyline that doesn't just grab your attention, it yanks you so far into the storyline that everything Jade feels, so do you…right down to the very depths of your soul! Jade is one unique character that is hard to explain, yet I loved her all the same. At times I thought she was in her later twenties, other times late teens, but yet I was still surprised when I did find out how old she really is! In some ways (the “normal” ones) she was a character I could totally relate to, understand why she did the things she did, but other times she reminded me of a 4 yr old who missed her much needed afternoon nap! Or a spanking. LOL Yet through it all I found myself rooting for her, admiring her, crying with & for her and yes, I will admit it, I was even a little jealous of her! I mean come on! Not one but TWO vampires vying for her attention? Maybe in different ways (I was nothing better than vampire bait), but still – TWO VAMPIRES!!! I love how the characters are all given their own story within the story. The vampires all have these unique abilities, or powers, how they came to be, etc. If you take all of these pieces - from the humor to the fear, the sass, the anger, the humans, vampires and everything else that this story encompasses, well, I find it all very over-the-top PERFANGTION! Thea has woven all of these parts together so magically that you can't help but be held spellbound! It all works together so beautifully, creating this fangtabulous story that by all rights should be too busy and/or hard to follow, but it isn't! Thea has achieved what so few authors can - a uniquely dark, naughty, evil, sassy & sarcastically witty vampire romance series! It is one helluva read that has so many components to it, mostly dark ones, but it still stays light enough to not become a true horror story. There is just enough humor, hints of romance & determination to not just survive, but to live that keeps this story so engrossing, entertaining and hopeful that maybe it will become a romance where the girl DOES get her vampire. Okay, maybe that hope is all mine! To me a great vampire book is one which includes the vampire declaring his true love for me, his one & only soul mate that he wants to claim, then change me to spend eternity by his side. Or under him...over him...*drool* Wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah, that Thea is one fangtastically talented author who has me so enthralled that I don't ever want this to end! I have read a ton of vampire books. I have read a ton of other types of paranormal books. Some of those were light fluff, some great romances. Then there are the few that defy being categorized. This...this is one such story, book and series! YES! It truly is THAT FANGTASMIC! Thea is one helluva Master Storyteller for sure!! I cannot wait to see what future she has in store for us errrr, I mean Jade!!

Now I read book 1 in its entirety, but I did add a quick review for each of the 3 parts that make up this book 1 as follows:
THE RECRUITER REVIEW:
WOW!! Talk about being sucked completely into a book! This had me from the very start and I couldn't believe it when I hit "This story continues with the Priestess"! I love me my Vampires, but this is something different altogether. It's got all the makings of a great story - humor, sadness, broken heart, evil, mystery, intrigue and oh so much more! I cannot wait to find out who the good guy is, if the magic is real, if the curse is real, etc.
THE PRIESTESS REVIEW:
WHEW!! Just when you think you have SOMETHING figured out, WHAM! You find out just how wrong you are! I LOVE IT!! In this part Jade is trying to figure out just what the hell happened to her, but you also get to know her somewhat, or at least some of what got her here. As for figuring out anything else...well Thea expertly feeds us just enough information to feed OUR addiction, to whet our appetite, so to speak. Of course that also means that what information we are given just makes us thirsty for more! I have become a thrall - so easy to control! Must keep reading!! Must break spell...or get lost in it even deeper! Whichever way the rabbit hole goes. :-)
THE MEDIUM REVIEW:
Okay! Now THIS part is more closer to what I thought this story might be like...closer, but not too close! LOL There was definitely a lot more twists & turns that I was NOT in any way, shape or form expecting! WOW! Who'd a thunk it?!? Jade definitely pissed someone off in this life or her past ones because she sure got the wrong end happening to her now! I like that we got to know her a little more, but she is over-the-top sass! I know she has been through, well, everything, but really!?! Can she not dial back that attitude a bit, even in her own head?? Of course, that is just one more reason as to why I thoroughly enjoyed this and cannot wait to continue Jade's adventure in Vampire Land!

It is extremely hard to describe Jade and Magnus' relationship. The book is full of heat, snark, sexyou banter, outsiders trying to interrupt their private time together. It's not your normal Vampire meets girl, sticks his fangs in and voila' you have a relationship. It builds slowly, but with a lot of heat and passion. I've heard the words fantastic, but I prefer organically blood induced sexual gymnastics. A definite read if you love "real" women and possessive Vampires. Thea Atkinson has made a 4☆ book well worth reading !!.

Set to come out on the 25th anniversary of the New York Times's publication of the Pentagon Papers--the 7,000-page secret history of the government's Vietnam War decision-making commissioned by Robert S. McNamara in 1967--Rudenstine's book is a remarkable achievement. Law professor Rudenstine (Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School) has mined the primary and secondary sources, interviewed three dozen important players, and unearthed new evidence. The result: a very readable political narrative with scholarly analysis of the landmark case. The excerpts and analyses of the papers that ran in the New York Times represented the largest unauthorized disclosure of classified documents in American history. The Nixon administration's effort to stop the Times (and later the Washington Post) marked the first time in American history that the government had sued to prevent newspapers from disclosing information for national security reasons. District Judge Murray Gurfein's order to cease publishing the material in question was the first time an American judge had taken such action against a newspaper. This substantive book's value lies in the breadth of the narrative, the sharpness of Rudenstine's analyses of the case's legal aspects, and the author's surprising but persuasively argued conclusion that the papers ``contained information that could have seriously harmed national security if disclosed.'' The government was unable to convince a majority of the US Supreme Court of that fact. And, as Rudenstine points out, the newspapers did not publish anything that had a negative impact on peace talks or that compromised diplomatic initiatives outside Vietnam. The Supreme Court chose ``to risk the dangers inherent in a freer press because the alternative resolution--enhancing government power to censor the press--was even more threatening to a stable and vital democracy.'' Surprisingly, a page-turner

Rudenstine's book is a terrific read! The secret's in the pacing, because he steps through the events leading to the landmark Supreme Court ruling day-by-day, sometimes hour-by-hour. Because the Nixon administration sought preliminary injunctions against the Times and Post, the legal battle was fought over a few weeks, accelerating toward the end.

The author is unsparing in his criticism of the legal approaches used on all sides and points out errors and opportunities missed by judges, lawyers, defendants, and plaintiffs. The result is a less tidy view of what I had previously presumed was a cut-and-dried First Amendment case.

Forgive my low-brow tastes, fellow readers, but this book reminded me of Tom Clancy's first novel, The Hunt for Red October: It makes a thriller by tracing the technicalities swirling around a crisis. I wish there were a sequel.

What About the Ellsberg-Russo Trial?

What's the author's problem? Alxheimer's or "selective memory?" He fails to mention the "joint trial of Dan Ellsberg AND Tony Russo" -- and Russo went to jail for civil resistance over the Pentagon Papers! -- and the author fails to mention the participation of renowned international law scholar Richard Falk. Surely with all the books Falk has in his home library here in Princeton, he must have purchased this one. Where's his response? Or would he rather forget his participation in this world-history-changing event? Further, there's nothing that would give a readers even a clue that the leak of the Pentagon Papers begat the downfall of Richard Nixon -- not just Watergate! Shame on you, Rudenstine!

This companion volume to the forthcoming BBC/Discovery Channel miniseries The Blue Planet is a broad-ranging, nonthreatening introduction to our planet's oceans for the reader who is interested, but not well versed, in science. Six of seven chapters cover the basic ocean environments (e.g., tropical seas, frozen seas, and the deep), with an emphasis on the plant and animal life found in these regions. Although the focus is on biological oceanography, one full chapter covers physical oceanography and marine geology. The relevant chemistry, geology, and physics of the ocean are also introduced as needed. Spectacular photographs are plentiful throughout. Although lacking a bibliography or suggestions for further reading, the book contains a good index, a glossary, and even cross references in the text when appropriate. The science is thorough and up-to-date. A good introduction to the oceans for the scientific novice, this book is recommended for public, high school, and middle school libraries that do not have extensive marine science collections, as well as for public libraries whose patrons are fans of the Discovery Channel. When viewed from space, Earth, 70 percent of which is covered with water, appears blue. Only 1 percent of these vast oceans has been studied, and these mysteries and discoveries are discussed in seven chapters. The first chapters explain the mechanics of the water planet, including the chemistry of water; the interactions of atmosphere and ocean; and how water moves in waves, currents, and tides. The remaining sections discuss the different realms of the oceans: the seas of the tropics, temperate regions, and the poles; the open oceans far from land; and the deep-sea regions. The plant and animal life adapted to each environment are depicted in beautiful photographs, and more information appears in sidebars. About the Author
Alastair Fothergill was educated at the universities of St. Andrew's and Durham in the UK, joining the BBC Natural History Unit in 1983. He has worked on a wide range of the department's programs, including the award winning The Really Wild Show, Wildlife on One, and the innovative Reefwatch. He worked with Sir David Attenborough on The Trials of Life and again, in 1993, when he produced Life in the Freezer, for which he also wrote the accompanying BBC book. In 1992 he was appointed head of the BBC Natural History Unit. In June 1998 he stepped down as head of the unit in order to concentrate on his role as series producer of The Blue Planet TV series. Martha Holmes specialized in marine biology and gained her Ph.D. at the University of York in UK. She started work with the BBC in 1998, presenting programs such as Reefwatch, a live underwater broadcast from the northern Red Sea, and The Natural World: Splashdown, which was followed by the award-winning wildlife adventure series Sea Trek, for which she wrote the accompanying BBC book. She worked in Antarctica for Sir David Attenborough's Life in the Freezer and has produced a number of other natural history films, such as Hippos out of Water, Deadly Liaisons, Otters -- The Truth and Reefwise. More recently, she produced the groundbreaking and BAFTA-winning film Wildlife Special: Polar Bear. She joined The Blue Planet team as a producer in 1997. Andrew Byatt began working with the Natural History Unit in 1989 as a safety diver for The Natural World: Splashdown. He has been highly acclaimed for his work on several Wildlife on One programs, including the award-winning film on jellyfish, The Swarm. More recently, Andrew has produced two films for Incredible Journeys on gray whales and rattlesnakes, and has co-produced Wildlife Special: Humpback Whales. He joined The Blue Planet team as a producer in 1997.

Water, water everywhere

DK Publishers have put out some stunning volumes recently, but they have especially outdone themselves with two: "Animal" and "The Blue Planet". Lavishly illustrated and gloriously photographed, "The Blue Planet" is a fascinating exploration of the 70% of our world that we don't live in. As one of the authors states, we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about our own oceans. "Blue Planet" tries to address the imbalance and, for the lay reader, succeeds admirably. The book is excellently organized and written in plain language comprehensible to almost any reader. It's divided into seven main parts: an overview of the ocean system, coastal shorelines, tropical seas, temperate seas, frozen seas, the open ocean, and the deep. Each part is divided into subsections with reference arrows to other relevant sections, making it easy to use for research. We learn a lot about the feeding, mating and survival patterns of the inhabitants of each layer of the ocean; most fascinating to this reviewer was the dazzling spectacle of the light shows caused by bioluminescence in fish that live so deep down that most of us will only see them on film. There's also a photograph of a dead giant squid, proving that archyteuthis is no figment of anyone's imagination; we wonder if anyone will ever glimpse a live one. The book is a companion volume to the excellent series on the Discovery Channel but it stands up very well on its own. It's a must-have for anyone interested in the infinite variety of life on this world.

One of those "Must Read" books

This book is so well written, so cleanly designed and so perfectly illustrated that it is required reading to all nature lovers, particularly those interested in the strange, beautiful and other-wordly life of the deep sees. Brilliant and sure to appeal to ages ranging from 8 to 80 years old.

Truly a great book

After watching the 'Blue Planet' documentaries on TV I developed an interest about life under the sea. Some of the documentary footage was truly groundbreaking work in terms of capturing the animals on film and bringing it to our homes in such a unique way.
The book, like the documentary is truly a great piece of work. It's well planned, presented and written. It covers all aspects of ocean life with out becoming to specific with regard to certain species. Some of the photographs throughout the book are truly wonderful; this book is a must for everyone, of all ages. It will satisfy any appetite for deep-sea discovery, shore life and marine biology.
5 Stars, This book has everything you need and more, and the presentation is second to none.

Great Original Series

So I was gifted a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and honestly...I loved it as I have the rest of the books in this series.
Unfortunately this book was shorter than the previous books but that didn't take anything away from the story.
Damian grew on me in this book and I liked the way his and Freya's relationship developed.
Great twist at the end. Did not see that coming!
Cant wait for the 5th book to see what happens!
If you want to read something original that hasn't been done repeatedly I highly recommend this Series!

I absolutely loved this series! I was sucked in from the first book. I happened upon them when they were offered through book bub and I am so glad i did. The characters are wonderful and so full of life. They lead you on their adventure with them. I found myself just as torn as the main character Freya when it came to her love interests. I recommend these books to all! I was surprised to learn they were considered young adult books, because I am not a "young adult", and I LOVED them!

I received a free review copy in exchange for an honest review so here it is...I loved this booked! I am a fan of the series and thought book four was even better than book three. I didn't want to put the book down, especially where Damian and Freya were concerned. I would say as much as I love Finn, Damian definitely grew on me in this book. There were two main twists in the book that definitely surprised me; one in the middle and one at the end leaving a cliff hanger for the next book. I cannot wait for the fifth book to come out and pick up right where this book ends.
